Behind every great man is a great … wardrobe. Yes, it’s true — at least when it comes to the handsomely clad, professionally accomplished chaps in our series, Dress for the Job You Want, which profiles more than a few good men who have proven that success is a calculation of both substance and style.
Many stylish and successful men have cut their teeth in the fashion industry, climbed the corporate ladder, created their own companies, and conjured plenty of new ideas — and have looked damn good doing it. For these guys, dressing for the occasion is simply part of the gig.
But you don’t have to be a fully suited, buttoned-up show-off to stake your claim in the game, as suave subtlety often wins in the end. And, with our apologies to Mark Twain, it takes a lot more than just clothes to make the man. However, a good sartorial statement never hurt anyone and can go a long way when it comes to charting your career course.
That said, there is no better way to continue this interview series than with a man who co-founded Montez Renault, a company that maintains one simple philosophy: “Men who look good and feel good can be inspired to do good.”
You could say that Christopher Renault Butler has always had a passion for men’s grooming — from his career on the football field to his financial sector prowess. So, after cutting his teeth in the corporate world and experiencing subsequent frustration at the lack of quality grooming services available for men just like him, he knew exactly how to transform that passion into a thriving business.
First launching the successful Butler’s Grooming Club in 2009 at Saks Fifth Avenue in his hometown of Birmingham, Ala. with business partner and former Auburn University football teammate, Karlos Montez Dansby, the enterprising Butler soon turned to additional ways he could elevate the practice of men’s grooming.
The Montez Renault luxury men’s hair, body, and skincare collection, which debuted late last year, does just that. The products are not only effective but also dermatologist-recommended and free of parabens and sulfates.
Because Butler’s own eclectic background has taken him from the gridiron to grooming counters, he is keenly aware that every man has his own uniquely multifaceted style and point of view. But living a well-groomed life has always been at the forefront of his ideology. So, he’s the first to agree that success and style (and grooming!) go hand in hand.
When he’s not improving grooming experiences for his male counterparts, this husband and father of two is likely golfing, running, or giving back to the community as a board member of several civic and charitable organizations. One thing’s certain: He’s doing it all in the most highly groomed style.
The Cheat Sheet: How do you define your personal style?
Christopher Butler: Clean, fresh and polished. It’s as simple as that. Good style need not be complicated.
CS: Why should all guys care about their personal style?
CB: It’s important to always look your best because you never know who you are going to see or meet throughout the day, and it’s best to always be prepared. It’s so cliche, but it’s so true.
CS: How do you view the relationship between your clothes and your career?
CB: I believe your clothing is a form of communication, so it’s important to consider what you want your clothes to say to your clients, to your colleagues, and to the people you meet. In today’s interconnected world, you never know when a chance encounter could lead to a future opportunity — and you certainly want to be confidently dressed and well-groomed for the occasion.
CS: Favorite part of your workday?
CB: The thing about entrepreneurship is that it doesn’t exactly fit the 9-to-5 mold. Every day is different, and sometimes the hours are long. But, at the end of the day, it’s all so rewarding. I think that’s what I love most about it.
CS: Best style advice you’ve received?
CB: Be confident. Polished style and grooming will take you a long ways, but they only go so far. The right attitude can really transform a look from good to great.
CS: What are your style and grooming cheats?
CB: Well, first of all, never underestimate the power of a good shoe in putting your best foot forward. Shoes are like the exclamation point to an ensemble, and a lackluster pair will pull down your entire look. When it comes to putting your best face forward, it’s important to have a good scrub, cleanser, and moisturizer that each work well together. I use the Montez Renault jojoba smoothing scrub, facial cleanser, and facial moisturizer.
