We’re all perfectly capable of choosing the shampoo and conditioner that’s right for our hair, but we still love learning about cult-favorite hair products and the items that keep chic celebrities’ manes in tip-top condition. The only problem is many favorite products of wealthy celebrities and fashion industry insiders can get a little pricey, and it’s probably not a good idea to start paying exorbitant per-ounce prices. Fortunately, we have a solution.
Whether your favorite beauty idols are runway models or movie stars, fashion editors, or beauty bloggers, they likely all have something in common: At least occasionally, they ditch the high-end products in favor of something more affordable. Something that we mere mortals can find in the aisles of our neighborhood drugstore.
No matter whom you take your beauty cues from, the power of a great drugstore shampoo and conditioner is universal. As is the feeling that you’ve gotten the greatest deal this side of Hollywood when you leave your Walgreens or CVS without a major dent in your wallet — but with great hair in your future.
1. Pantene Pro-V Classic Clean Shampoo and Daily Conditioner
Model Jacquelyn Jablonski told Vogue, “I like Pantene shampoo and conditioner, because my hair is so straight and I find it gives me a little lift.” Sounds like reason enough to try Pantene’s Pro-V Classic Clean Shampoo, and the corresponding Daily Conditioner if you want manageable hair with healthy shine.
2. Herbal Essences Smooth Collection Shampoo and Conditioner
Another celeb Vogue talked to about their favorite drugstore shampoo? Designer Pamela Love, who confessed, “My go-to is Herbal Essences for dry, frizzy, or unmanageable hair. It smells amazing and really does tone down any frizz.” While we aren’t sure exactly which Herbal Essences line is Love’s favorite, you can’t go wrong with the brand’s Smooth Collection shampoo and conditioner, which promise smooth and silky hair, even for those prone to frizz.
3. Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo
Into the Gloss, thanks to its long-running Top Shelf series, has a wealth of information on beauty products — high-end and drugstore alike — that your favorite celebs are using. The first on the publication’s checklist of the best drugstore hair products? Neutrogena’s Anti-Residue Shampoo, which is recommended by a chic fashion industry insider: Glamour.com executive fashion and beauty editor Susan Cernek.
4. Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner
Model Jessica Stam told Into the Gloss, “Herbal Essences Hello Hydration is a great shampoo and conditioner combo, and I’ve used everything. I actually discovered it because my boyfriend uses it! I love it. I get compliments from hairdressers I’ve been working with for years, saying, ‘This is the best your hair has ever looked, what are you using?’ and I’m like, ‘Herbal Essences!’” Consider us convinced.
5. Renpure Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner
Into the Gloss’s Top Shelf interviews are the gifts that just keep on giving — especially if you’re searching for surprisingly affordable and accessible shampoos approved by chic A-listers. Musician Kacy Hill told the publication, “I use this really cheap shampoo that I found, but it’s the best — it’s called Renpure Argan Oil Shampoo and I bought it on accident. I wash my hair with it twice a week to preserve the color.” This shampoo is so affordable that we’d pick up the corresponding conditioner, too.
6. John Frieda Sheer Blonde Everlasting Blonde Shampoo
Into the Gloss learned model Gigi Hadid has “always used John Frieda.” She also added, “The Sheer Blonde Everlasting Blonde Shampoo makes my hair really soft, but I’m not sure that it actually makes it blonder.” Be that as it may, it’s probably worth trying. And if you want to give it a shot, your wallet probably won’t hurt too much if you pick up the corresponding conditioner.
7. Pantene Breakage to Strength Conditioner
According to InStyle, Eva Mendes is a big fan of Pantene’s Breakage to Strength conditioner. She explained, “I put this in my hair and cover it with a shower cap while I do stuff around the house. Once I rinse it out, my hair is super soft.” That’s a pretty good reminder that you don’t always have to rinse your conditioner off in the shower immediately after applying it.
8. Organic Root Stimulator Hair Fertilizer
It may not technically be a shampoo or a hair conditioner, but do you really want to pass up a hair treatment recommendation from Jennifer Hudson? We thought not. InStyle learned that Hudson loves Organic Root Stimulator Hair Fertilizer, which promises to “help to create the perfect environment for hair to grow stronger, giving you healthy beautiful hair — naturally!” Hudson said, “This keeps my hair healthy at the roots,” which sounds like a pretty vital hair care step to us.
9. Finesse Shampoo
In an interview with Allure, Kendall Jenner revealed both she and Kim Kardashian like Finesse shampoo. “My hair has held up so much that every hair stylist has been like, ‘Why is your hair still so amazing?’ And I’m like, ‘I literally don’t do anything. I just use Finesse.’ And everyone’s like, ‘What?’” We aren’t sure exactly which Finesse shampoo the sisters prefer, but Finesse’s Self-Adjusting Moisturizing Shampoo, which is formulated to “protect the hair shaft with a coat of conditioning shine,” sounds pretty promising.
10. Clear Hydration Fix Shampoo
Kendall and Kim aren’t the only members of the Kardashian-Jenner clan to use drugstore shampoo. According to The Zoe Report, Khloé Kardashian “uses Clear Hydration Fix Shampoo to keep her strands healthy.” This formula promises both a hydrated scalp and shiny hair. What’s not to love?
11. Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap
It may not be exactly what you expected to see on a list of celeb-approved shampoos, but Olivia Wilde confesses to using Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap to wash her hair when she’s in the wilderness. She told Byrdie, “I’ve been using the same hippie shit my whole life. It’s the greatest! You can even use it in your hair when you go camping.” If only we knew which scent Wilde prefers.
