Fashion Trends: The Best New Menswear Pieces Available
Buying and searching for newer, must-have menswear pieces is always exciting. Let’s face it: Very few things beat the thrill of discovering new designers and their innovative takes on classic or hybrid menswear items. As the colder months approach, it’s the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe by giving some newer menswear pieces a try. From designer pieces to must-haves from your favorite stores, here are some of the best new menswear pieces you need to have.
New designer menswear pieces from Gap
Gap, which had been struggling in recent months to entice customers amid competition from other fast fashion brands, is bouncing back from having to close 175 stores across North America and is changing its conservative tune, instead opting for vibrant and up-to-date apparel. Last month, GQ previewed the upcoming Gap capsule collection created by its Best New Menswear Designers in America (BNMDA) for 2015. Each year, GQ chooses an intimate group of designers who have in some way made a name for themselves and have influenced the industry. The four winners for 2015 are NSF (Nick Friedberg and Jamie Haller), Emil and Sandy Corsillo of The Hill-Side, Chris Stamp of Stampd, and David Hart. This new class of menswear designers is set to change the fashion game, winning a GQ year-long partnership with the annual BNMDA x Gap capsule collection. The pieces are now in stores just in time for the holiday season.
For this year’s winners, each designer expressed a signature take on classic menswear pieces. The collection includes: tailored blazers, trousers, overcoats, leather jackets, tees, sweatshirts, sweatpants, denim, and field jackets. Accessories, such as shoes, hats, bags, socks, and ties, are also included in the collections. The capsule collection offers designer goods at a lower, more affordable, price point, which not only means that they’re a steal but they’re not going to last long on the shelves.
The collection hit the shelves this month and is available now online at Gap.com.
Notable designer piece from the collection: The Hill-Side, from the minds of the Corsillo brothers. Their collections are about fetish-worthy pieces, created with meticulous attention to detail. For the BNMDA x Gap capsule collection, expect to see wool sneakers, camo-lined tote bags, and square-bottom ties.
Blogger suggestion on new coveted menswear pieces
GQ’s resident style expert and blogger, Jake Woolf, explains his new menswear brand obsession is John Elliott. Woolf says the designer is one of the best today, simply because he just gets it. The designer pinpoints an understanding of what young men are into these days in terms of aesthetics, but the styles run much deeper than what they appear in terms of quality and how the pieces will wear over time. John Elliot takes classic pieces that young men love, like hoodies or sweatpants, and recreates them for a new generation.
Notable designer piece from the collection: John Elliot’s pieces are fashionable and highly functional. His olive color Engineered Pants, although pricey, are an incredibly versatile piece. They’re a hybrid cross between a comfortable slim-fitting yet baggy sweatpant, and chino that can be dressed perfectly up or down.
The ultimate menswear fashion store
When you’re looking for great style options and you’re not sure where to start, your first thought should be Topman. This worldwide dominator in men’s fashion started from the British high street phenomenon and has come a long way since its inception in 1978. It’s considered a go-to in not only up-to-date style but style that’s 10 steps ahead of many of the traditional stores.
Notable designer piece from the collection: The Topman Camel Cape. Considering this past summer was dominated by superhero movies such as Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, it seems to be no surprise that the cape is in. Although the movies and fashion have little to nothing to do with each other, this enlarged scarf is one of the hottest menswear accessories for the season, functioning as an outer layer to wear over your sweater, leather jacket, or coat.
