Grey Hair: Should You Dye It or Leave It?

Let’s face it: No one wants to age and most men will do whatever they can to avoid looking older. Wrinkly skin and fine lines are things everyone wants to combat, while other signs of aging, such as grey hair, don’t have the same stigma attached. In fact, while some men rush to the nearest barber at the first sign of greys, others choose to embrace the look. This poses the question: To go grey or not to go grey? To make things easier, we’re weighing the pros and cons, so you can make an informed decision.

It makes you feel older

Grey hair can sometimes make you look older. Writer Peter Jaret for WebMD notes that he was rocking a full beard when he first started getting grey hair in his 30s. This beard soon began to progressively house more and more grey hairs.”It wasn’t just the image that bothered me. It was the way I felt. Sure, gray hair is supposed to make men look distinguished. To give them gravitas. Look at Bill Clinton. Look at the baby-faced newsman Anderson Cooper, whose prematurely grey hair must have helped him land a job as a CNN anchor.” The downside, he notes, is it can make you appear much older than you really are.

If you share that mindset and grey hair makes you feel old, then consider dying it. If you’re ready to dye your hair, there are at-home coloring products to try, or you can make your life easier by going to the salon. The secret is choosing  a hue that looks as close to your natural color as possible.

It’s on trend

Yes, you read that correctly. Celebrities have actively dyed their hair grey because it’s cool. The faux grey hair trend has been around since 2013, and it’s still going strong for millennial men and women alike. In a New York Times piece, writer Max Berlinger confirms this as a trend after speaking with various influential colorists and Internet personalities and noting that searches for gray hair-dye tripled on Amazon in the last year. And if you’re starting to go gray early, embrace it — not only is it trendy, but it’ll be really easy to maintain.

This is an incredibly easy case to make, no matter your age or your grey situation. Thought it’s strictly an opinion (but a very valid one), silver foxes, as they’re called, are viewed as incredibly sexy. Add a five o’clock shadow to it and men and women alike will not be able to take their eyes off you when you walk down the street.  Need more of a reference?
