Hate Your Hair Cut? Do These 4 Things to Make It Better
You did it: You went to your barber or hairstylist and tried something new. But after getting one good look in the mirror at the result, you feel like you made a huge mistake. You hate what you see and now you don’t know what to do. We’re here to help you sort through this mess. First, take a deep breath and follow these simple steps. And remember, if after trying all of these things you’re still not happy, just know that hair grows back and it won’t be long until you’re back to your old self.
1. Go back and see if they can fix it
So you walked out of your barber or salon and you don’t recognize yourself. Maybe you weren’t that clear about what you wanted, didn’t bring a picture with you, or maybe your barber really dropped the ball on this one. No matter who’s at fault, the fact is, you hate your hair cut so now you need to try and fix it. Before you go storming into your barber and yelling — pull yourself together and go in with a positive attitude.
“Just like any other complaint, it always makes sense to have a positive dialogue that moves everyone forward towards a cut color that works,” Devin Toth, hair stylist at Salon SCK in New York City told Good Housekeeping. “And be specific — if all you’re saying is that you dislike it, you aren’t giving your stylist any useful feedback to help you achieve your hair goals.” Don’t feel bad about your complaint because it’s in everyone’s best interest if you walk out of the barber or salon happy, and you shouldn’t feel like you can’t be candid with them about what you want to make you happy. And consider giving it a few days. You may just dislike the initial change rather than the actual cut.
As a side note, if you encounter a problem like a stylist not being receptive to your needs, ask to speak to a manager right away. A salon should want to uphold excellent customer service with their clients. After all, you paid for your cut so they should do their best to hold up their end of the bargain.
2. Hide it with a hat
If it’s possible, because we’re sure most places of business won’t allow you to wear a hat all day — unless you happen to be a minor or major league baseball player, try wearing a hat to cover it up. While opting for one with your favorite team on it may brighten your spirits, try wearing a hat that doesn’t make your scalp stand out too much in a more neutral, less loud style and color of the baseball variety or even a newsboy-esque cap, which will go nicely with a suit.
3. Try living with it
If you choose not to go back to fix it, then the next best thing to do is live with it. Sometimes the shock of a new, unexpected outcome can make you angry, but sometimes we confuse something new and different to be terrible, especially when it comes to the perceptive permanence of a hair cut. Before you do anything rash or barge into your barber or salon demanding a refund, take some time with it and let the look sink in. Chances are, it’s not as bad as you think it is. A stylist is likely to tell you to live with it for a little while to see if you actually don’t like it. We’re sure a little pomade or paste, plus the reassurance that hair grows back (between four and six inches a year) will calm you down and change your attitude towards it.
4. Buzz it off
