How Meghan Markle’s Latest Fashion Choice Makes a Bold Statement
Meghan Markle sets trends every time she heads out the door, and some of them look pretty unconventional. In many ways, her fashion choices differ strongly from Kate Middleton’s. Some of them also point to how she might set herself apart after the wedding. And one of them in particular really drew a line in the sand (page 7).
1. The future royal stepped out in mismatched earrings
The royal trendsetter wore a mismatched set of earrings on a visit to Cardiff, Wales, her third official royal engagement. She wore an arrow-shaped diamond stud earring by California-based designer Zofia Day in her right ear and a line of three gold stars in her left. Trendspotters believe those came from Gabriela Artigas’ Triple Shooting Star Earrings.

2. She also carried a crossbody purse
In February 2017, Markle bucked tradition again when she wore a crossbody purse on an outing to Scotland. She paired the Strathberry bag with a large plaid coat, which fit her more loosely than what the always-tailored Kate Middleton would wear. Middleton also favors clutch purses, which set Markle’s bag apart as something of a fashion risk for the hugely traditional family.

3. Markle wore a suit to her first formal event
When she showed up to the Endeavour Fund Awards in February, Markle may have turned some heads. For her first evening appearance as the royal fiancee, she chose a sleek Alexander McQueen classic suiting jacket over a Boss ivory bodysuit with McQueen black cigarette pants and matching pumps, according to E! While Markle has worn suits repeatedly over the years, the outfit still marked a departure from what we often expect from the royal family.

4. Some of her fashion choices highlight her causes
During a trip to the Welsh capital of Cardiff, she gave a subtle nod to causes she supports through her ensemble. She donned a black coat by Stella McCartney, a designer known for her cruelty-free and sustainable clothing. The future royal also paired it with a handbag by DeMellier London, whose proceeds go to prevent child mortality through the charity SOS Children’s Villages. In addition, her jeans came from Hiut denim, a small Welsh brand that highlighted her support for Welsh employment.
Next: Perhaps this tendency ties back to her Hollywood roots.
5. Her tastes gravitate toward trendy
In contrast to Middleton’s timeless sophistication, Markle likes to wear trendier styles. That makes sense, given her history as an actress used to the red carpet. And her tastes strongly influence the market, as well. For example, The Telegraph reported a 67% increase in searches for “vegan leather trousers” after Markle mentioned them as one of her fashion staples. Can you picture Middleton ever wearing leather bottoms?
Next: The future royal does not forget her roots.
6. She also favors smaller designers
In her very first post-engagement photo, Markle wore the Canadian brand Line. She nodded to the North at the Invictus Games, too, which marked her first public outing with Prince Harry. At that event, Markle also wore two other Canadian brands, Mackage and Aritzia. In contrast to Middleton, who prefers British designers, Markle likes to wear American fashions, including Everlane.

7. She chose a side in this legendary Chicago debate
According to The Chicago Tribune, Markle recently chose one very important side. She visited Chicago to complete her visa application and arrived wearing a hat. People spotted the future royal at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport wearing a White Sox cap. Markle also has some roots to the area. She graduated from Northwestern University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree, double majoring in theater and international studies. Sounds like both paid off.
