Men’s Grooming Tips: How to Give Yourself a Manicure at Home

Alright guys, it’s time to give your nails some TLC. If you can’t imagine heading to the local nail salon for a manicure, it’s time to take matters into your hands and take care of them yourself. No man should be walking around with long nails, frayed cuticles, or gnarly hang nails.

“A guy’s hands don’t have to be perfectly smooth, but they should be clean and well kept,” says manicurist Angel Williams to Men’s Health. “It shows he cares about all aspects of his hygiene.” Which is always great, and desirable of course. Here’s our simple guide to your DIY, at-home MANicure to make your hands as presentable as they are strong.

What you’re going to need:

Step 1: Soak your nails

Get your soapy water and your nail brush, wash your fingers first, and give them a scrub with the nail brush. Then, go ahead and soak them in the water for a few minutes to soften your hands and your cuticles. Follow this by cleaning underneath each of your fingernails with the pointed end of the nail file that we suggested you buy.

Step 2: Clip them

Grab your clippers and start by resting it (making sure to not push inward) on your nail and clip no more than three to four times per nail, following the natural curve of your finger, Williams says to Men’s Health. Don’t worry about making them round just yet, that’s what the nail file is for.

Step 3: File

Using your nail file, smooth each cut nail to even out the edges until you have a rounded shape, making sure to keep it squared off near the edges so you won’t get ingrowns easily. Then, give each nail plate a quick swipe with the nail buffer, using a similar motion to the way you give dress shoes a quick rub.

Step 4: Tend to your cuticles

Next, get your cuticle oil and dab a little bit on each nail and rub it in slightly so that it doesn’t drip off. Wait about a minute and then use your cuticle pusher to push back each wayward cuticle to where it originally came from. Please make sure to not do this without cuticle oil because a dry cuticle will be more apt to bleed and that’s not exactly the look you’re going for. If there is excess cuticle skin, feel free to get a cuticle scissor and cut around the shape of the nail in a circular motion.

Step 5: Moisturize your mitts

Congrats, you did it! You gave yourself a manicure. Now, all that’s left to do is moisturize, which will repair dry skin and seal in moisture.
