How to Make People Think You’re Successful

Science says that you can actually make people think you’re successful. It follows the same logical pattern as first impressions: You want your first impression to be a successful one, in order to come off as an accomplished person. An impression is made within five seconds of meeting someone, so your time is limited to make it count. Although dressing for success is obvious, a 2011 Canadian study involving 87 university students found that professionally dressed men came off as more affluent and were expected to make more money. Simply put: If you want to leave people with the impression you’re successful, don’t look like a slob.

Additionally, a more recent 2013 Turkish study honed in on what exactly a man should wear in order to come off as more successful: “The man was rated more positively on all attributes apart from trustworthiness when pictured in the bespoke suit … On the evidence of this study it appears men may be advised to purchase clothing that is well‐tailored, as it can positively enhance the image they communicate to others.”

In that respect, success, or at least the look of it, can be bought at your local tailor. You are selling people a perception of yourself; here are some ways to get your point across that you’re a success:

1. Dress the part

This bears repeating. Look like success and you will exude success. And make sure your clothing is tailored to fit you perfectly. Also, keep your suit colors and clothing in the neutral zone.

2. Make sure you look clean and well put together

Shave and make sure your ‘do is on point. It shouldn’t be messy and if you’re lucky enough to have a lot of hair, keep it under control. Don’t wear too much cologne and make sure your hands and nails are manicured and presentable. Male manicures are the best (sans polish of course).

3. Manners, manners, manners

Always be polite no matter what. Nothing leaves a better impression than manners, knowing when to speak, knowing when to stop speaking (and listen), and always holding the door for a lady.

4. Be organized

If you come off as a slob at work — eh, that’s not a good thing. Success translates to organization, specifically physical organization of your working space even if your mind is splintered off in a million different directions. No matter how scattered your brain might be, at least you’ll know where you pens are.

5. Widen your vocabulary

The second you open your mouth you should come off as intelligent. Make sure you speak clearly and purposefully. You can impress others with an extensive vocabulary, or at least a few big words here and there to show that you know what the hell you’re talking about. Even if you don’t, believe in your bullshit (but don’t lie about anything of great importance, you don’t want to get in trouble or be perceived as a liar), and others will too.
