Do you still need help getting your tie on correctly? Unless you’re using this as a smooth tactic to get close to the ladies, it’s time learn how to get your tie on by yourself. But don’t worry, my friends, The Cheat Sheet will show you some techniques for achieving a dapper look in no time. So sit back and get ready to be the boss of your ties.
1. Pop your collar and button the top button
Start by popping your collar. Being the boss that you are, this should come naturally. Next, button your shirt’s top button.
2. The thick side of your tie should be 5 to 6 inches below the belt line
If you know your left from your right, you’re off to a good start. If you’re right-handed, the thick side of the tie should be on your left, and the thin side should be on your right, about five to six inches below your belt line. The thick side of your tie should be about twice as long as the thin side.
3. Cross the thick side over the thin side
Show your tie who’s in charge. Grab the thick side of your tie and cross it over the top of the thin side. The thick side should be covering the top of the thinner side.
4. Wrap the thick side of the tie under the thin side
Hopefully your fingers are nimble, because there’s just a little more wrapping to be done. Now you’ll have to wrap the thick side of the tie underneath the thin side. You should now be able to see the underside of your tie.
5. Push the thick side of the tie through the loop
Then, lift the thick side of the tie up and push it down through the loop. At this point, you should be able to see the beginning of the knot starting to form. You’re almost there.
6. Cross the thick side of the tie over to form the knot
The back of the tie should now be facing forward. Cross the thick side over the thin side to form the knot.
7. Pull the thick side up through the loop
Pull the thick side of the tie up through the loop, so that it flips over. You should now be able to see the front side of your tie.
8. Ensure your tie is at an appropriate length
If you want to look your best, you’ll have to make sure your tie is the right length. You want the point of your tie to be around the center of your belt line. A tie that’s too short will make you look like a school boy (but not in a good way), and a tie that’s too long will just look sloppy. Try to find that happy medium.
9. Flip the thick side of your tie over your left shoulder
Once your tie is at the right length, flip the thick side of the tie over your left shoulder. Locate the space between your tie, and push the thick side through the knot. Pull it down, and tighten it up. Just don’t make it too tight, or it will be uncomfortable and probably a little hard to breathe. The cute girl won’t know whether you’re flirting or just choking from the pressure of your tie.
10. Pull the thin side of your tie down while pushing the knot up toward the collar
Push the knot up toward your collar as you pull the thin side of the tie down. Tuck it in, put your collar down, and check to see that your tie is straight and neat.
Now you know how to tie your tie like a boss. Don’t blame us if you look so good that the ladies mess it up again. We warned you.
