Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress and Other Celebrity Outfits That Fast Fashion Has Copied

All it takes is for a celebrity to wear a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes once for a designer to become a household name. What happens after is other brands replicate the original design, ripping off the designer. Here’s a list of designer items fast fashion brands have replicated, including Kate Middleton’s wedding dress (page 7) and Meghan Markle’s shoes (page 4).

Models and fashion bloggers alike wear a pair of Alexander Wang sandals with metal embellishments on repeat. The sandals cost nearly $600. But numerous fast fashion brands have copied Wang’s design including Zara and Forever 21. Their versions sell for $69.90 and $48 respectively.

Online fashion retailer, Boohoo.com, sells a very similar version a coat worn by Meghan Markle. The coat appears to be inspired by Markle’s cream colored coat worn to publicly announce her engagement to Prince Harry. The price tag on the fast fashion version is less than $30 while Markle’s handmade coat by Line The Label goes for $750, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

Hint: Celebrities have been wearing these shoes for decades.

Celebrities such as Catherine Deneuve, Romy Schneider, and Brigitte Bardot are among the first to wear Chanel’s two-tone shoes when they’re introduced, according to Elle. Today, Chanel sells the shoes for $800, depending on the style, according to the brand’s website. Zara has a number of dupes, starting at $45.90.

While attending an event before her relationship with Prince Harry goes public, Meghan Markle wears heels with a thick, clear strap. As the transparent trend is taking off (page 6), Target creates a similar version for $32.99.

In a collaboration with Puma, Rihanna designs a pair of pink flat sandals. Fast fashion brand Forever 21 sells a nearly identical pair. Puma takes legal action alleging Forever 21 “swooped in and capitalized on Puma’s efforts,” according to WWD.

When Kanye West designs a new line of clothing and shoes for his fashion line, Yeezy, his wife, Kim Kardashian, is one of the first — if not the first — person to wear pieces from the collection. After stepping out in a pair of lucite heels costing $595, according to Racked, fast fashion brands debut practically identical shoes.

Hint: Brides can get royal style at a fraction of the cost.

Fast fashion brand H&M sells a wedding dress designed after Kate Middleton’s dress. The dress sells for $300 while Middleton’s Alexander McQueen custom-made gown cost the royal family thousands of dollars.
