Meghan Markle may have the royal glam squad on speed dial, but that hasn’t always been the case. In her time as an actress, she worked with some of the best beauty experts in the business. And, as a result, she learned some genius royal-approved beauty tricks.
From achieving slicked back buns to keeping her complexion young and fresh, see some of the beauty tricks Meghan Markle swears by.
1. Use a beautyblender to apply foundation
One makeup tool she can’t live without? Her beautyblender. In an interview with Birchbox, the royal explained how she likes to spread her foundation with her trusty beautyblender. Doing so helps achieve a more even — read: natural — application.

2. Only apply foundation to the areas that need it
In addition to applying foundation with a beautblender, Meghan Markle likes to keep her face makeup as natural as possible. Explaining to Birchbox, “I never want to cover my freckles, so we just do a ‘wash’ of foundation in certain sections instead of over the entire face.”

3. To look more awake, apply highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes
If you’re trying to mask the appearance of tired-looking eyes, try using a highlighter on the corners of your eyes to create the illusion of bright eyes. Markle’s favorite highlighter for the job? Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat.

4. To tame frizz, use a toothbrush
As far as frizz is concerned, Markle has the ultimate fix: a toothbrush. She prefers a boar bristle toothbrush (but she says regular toothbrushes work, too) and uses the small brush to take care of any unwanted frizz.
Next: If you use hairspray right you can also tame updos.
5. To tame updo flyaways, spray hairspray on a toothbrush
To up the ante, Meghan Markle also sprays hairspray on her boar bristle toothbrush to help keep flyaways at bay. This beauty trick especially comes in handy when her hair is slicked back.

6. For youthful-looking skin, practice facial exercises
Meghan Markle’s number one anti-aging beauty trick? Facial exercises. Admitting to Birchbox, “I do facial exercises from one of my favorite aestheticians, Nicola Joss, who basically has you sculpt your face from the inside out. I swear it works, as silly as you may feel,” says the royal. “On the days I do it, my cheekbones and jawline are waaaay [sic] more sculpted,” she adds.

7. Hair flip for added volume
There’s no denying that Meghan Markle has perfect hair. Her trick for adding volume to her blowouts? A good old fashioned hair flip and texturizing spray. While she was filming Suits, she told Birchbox, “When my hair is feeling a little weighted, Suanne, my hair artist on set, has me bend forward and she sprays a little Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray or nothing at all, and then has me ‘flip back hard’ to give my hair a little extra bounce.”

8. Try jade rolling
Looking for another way to target — and get rid of — dark circles? Give jade rolling a try! Meghan Markle is a big fan of facial massage and using a jade roller to massage your complexion can not only improve circulation and enhance the overall look of your skin, it can help get rid of dark circles and under-eye bags too.
Jade rolling can help drain the buildup of fluid under your eyes and give the skin a brighter, more awake-looking effect.

9. Keep nail polish simple
This is more of a rule, but bright nail polish is one of the queen’s biggest pet peeves. Meghan Markle will have to kiss fun manicures goodbye and opt for a more natural look as that is what’s expected out of all royal women.
The queen is very particular about nail polish. Her favorite is Essie nail polish. At around $9 a pop, the popular nail care brand may be one of the most relatable — if not, the only relatable — thing about the queen. Her favorite color is a light pink hue called Ballet Slippers.
