If you’re a man who’s seriously into his grooming regimen, then you’re probably aware of the debate over drug store skin care versus high-end luxe skin care. While the debate has raged on, there is a study that may finally settle this ongoing debate.

A study, appearing in Byrdie, took a look at popular drugstore brand, MD Complete, and pitted it against Obagi, a dermatologist-approved anti-aging brand that is the preferred choice for many doctors. The study sought to figure out whether a higher price tag on a product means higher quality and better results. The price of Obagi’s products range from $31 to $363, with the majority of the brand’s products ranging from $43 to $113. The article notes that while $31 for an anti-aging product is not terribly expensive, comparably, it’s much more than the majority of drugstore anti-aging brands.

The actual study took place over 12 weeks, using participants with moderately sun-damaged skin, and tested both products by utilizing a split-face study, meaning the drug store product was applied on one side, and the high-end product on the other. After the study period was finished, the researchers compared the results on both sides of the participants faces and shockingly found that the drugstore side showed about a three times greater result than the high-end luxury line product. (The drugstore products that were used were MD Complete’s Anti-Aging Wrinkle Remover Duo Kit, which includes the Advanced Wrinkle Remover and the Eye Wrinkle Remover, which cost less than a single product from a luxury line.)

One last thing worth noting in regards to the study: While the drugstore brand beat out luxe product, “both lines demonstrated a statistically significant clinical improvement in photo-aged skin at the four-week mark” in the study. Gentlemen, this is all the more reason why it’s advisable that once you’re set in a skin care routine to stick with it.
