6 Most Memorable Looks of the 2016 Election Campaign

Wednesday morning marked the end of a larger-than-life, drama-filled election campaign season. Instead of focusing on the protests and tension that followed the big decision, we’d like to talk about something lighter: the fashion. That’s right, in the midst of meme-worthy one-liners and comically cathartic Saturday Night Live skits, we have to say the women of this year’s election brought some truly fantastic looks to the coverage. Whether you voted to make America great again or are forever #WithHer, here are six amazing outfits anyone can get down with, in chronological order.

1. Ivanka Trump: July 21, 2016

Regardless of your opinion about our President-Elect, a lot of us can agree that his daughter, Ivanka, is the epitome of beauty, brains, and great style. At each rally, interview, and debate, Ivanka always wore something that was equal parts professional, polished, and utterly chic. Take the Republican National Convention, for example, where she wore a peach number from her own eponymous label. While there was some controversy about promoting her own design, we have to say that the mogul looked composed and — if we’re being honest — a little presidential herself. Plus, the modest neckline and subtle side slit was the perfect mix of tasteful and sultry. Paired with her signature straight hairdo, the entire ensemble was flawless.

2. Hillary Clinton: July 27, 2016

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Hillary Clinton is a style icon, and hasn’t met a pantsuit she didn’t like. After a while,  a blazer and trousers combination can become monotonous, but the Democratic nominee consistently spiced up the predictable outfit choice with interesting cuts, zesty colors, and refreshing textiles. At the Democratic National Convention, for example, Clinton’s cobalt blue suit and high-neck collar had “girl boss” written all over it.

3. Ivanka Trump: October 9, 2016

While Ivanka usually wears fit-and-flare dresses in sensible neutrals, she does travel outside her sartorial comfort zone. Case in point: The second presidential debate. Here, she wore a gorgeous emerald sheath dress with black piping along the bodice and waist. Sure, the simple silhouette is a hallmark of any campaign, but the severe, round plunge-neck added some necessary drama and sex appeal. Ivanka hit the sartorial nail on the head by pairing this frock with a sleek bun and dangling earrings.

4. Melania Trump: October 9, 2016

Of course, a round up of this election cycle’s most memorable fashion moments wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the pussy-bow worn by Melania. After the infamous Access Hollywood audio leak that featured Donald Trump making lewd and aggressive comments about women, his wife attended the second presidential debate in a hot pink pussy-bow blouse and matching pants. Coincidence? We think not. Setting the possible subtext aside, the outfit itself is pretty fun. We love matching brights as much as the next style-conscious woman and the preppy pink hue and retro bow is giving us some major Jackie O. vibes.

Another day, another glorious pantsuit brought to you by Clinton. At the second presidential debate last month, the Secretary of State and Democratic nominee sported yet another pantsuit — but it was a far cry from boring. The sleek shawl collar and drastic color-blocking gives this typical silhouette a modern twist. On the accessories front, her bold gold jewelry makes a great finishing touch.

6. Melania Trump: November 9, 2016

When it comes being a stylish First Lady, Michelle Obama is a tough act to follow. However, Melania brought her sartorial A-game last night as her husband accepted his nomination as president. Between the asymmetrical hemline, dramatic draping, and wide-legged pants, Trump’s Ralph Lauren playsuit looks more “cool girl” than “FLOTUS.” To keep the attention on the outfit, Melania kept her hair and makeup natural and stuck with minimalist jewelry.
