7 Red Lipstick Tips Inspired By Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow once said, “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” And we completely agree. Nothing screams confidence, sex appeal, and femininity quite like a bold red lip, although it can be tough to pull off. To provide a bit of guidance on how to wear the look, we’ve taken some red lipstick tips from the master herself.

1. Wear matching heels

Gwyneth Paltrow knows the key to rocking a red lip is all about striking the right balance. You don’t want to go overboard with matching red details, but you also can’t let the color be so subtle that it gets overlooked. In this case, Paltrow attended the opening of the RH Modern Gallery in Los Angeles and sported a pop of color not only on her lips, but also on her feet. This is a perfect example of how wearing red heels or carrying a small red clutch can totally balance your look.

2. It’s great in beach towns

Bold lipstick looks incredible during the summer, especially when you’re in a beach town. In the Hamptons, Paltrow wore a perfect floral dress to the Moet & Chandon Toasts To Paddle For Pink charity event, and she brilliantly decided to match her red lip to the accents in her dress’s design. To avoid clashing with your outfit, you need to make sure your red lipstick shade identically matches whatever you’re wearing. In Paltrow’s case, she made sure her lipstick had burnt orange undertones.

3. Be a minimalist

A major theme running throughout Paltrow’s red lip styling choices is white outfits. Paltrow knows how to take minimalist fashion and maximize it with a bold detail. Here, Paltrow attended the Los Angeles premiere of Thanks for Sharing with minimal eye makeup, a natural glow to her skin, simple straight hair, and a white Lanvin dress. To elevate the otherwise natural look, she threw on classic red lipstick and suddenly went from everyday pretty to timeless glamour.

4. Stick to black and white

If ever you’re unsure of which clothing colors go best with red lipstick, you can always stick to black and white. There’s no way to go wrong with a bright red lip paired with these minimal colors, and Paltrow proved this when she arrived at the imagine1day Annual Gala Honoring Tracy Anderson wearing a black midi skirt, strappy black sandals, and a sleeveless white crop top. To balance the look, she added her signature red lip and accessorized with a red clutch. The result? A smashing success.

5. Make it your signature look

Though we’ve been seeing Paltrow rock her bright red lip a lot in recent months, this look has actually been a favorite of hers for years. To prove it, we’re throwing it back to the Bent On Learning charity event in 2009, where Paltrow wore a defiant red lip with a deep maroon, one-shoulder dress. Paltrow’s style has greatly evolved in the last eight years (she probably wouldn’t be caught dead in that dress today), but the red lipstick is clearly here to stay.

6. Pair it with a power blazer

We can all agree Paltrow is an absolute boss. She’s a mother, a business owner, actress, singer, and a philanthropist, among a number of other demanding roles. With these titles in mind, we find it fitting that she wore a black Tom Ford power suit to the 2014 amfAR gala. By adding red lipstick, she sent the message that women can be leaders, bosses, and boldly feminine all at once.

7. Exude classic glamour

Paltrow looked like she borrowed her dress from Daisy Buchanan of The Great Gatsby when she attended the 79th Academy Awards. We couldn’t get enough of the Art Deco gown’s side-sweeping train, salmon embroidery, mermaid cut, and delicate sheer paneling. To top off the look, she wore a deep red lipstick and chandelier earrings, teaching us that achieving classic glamour is as easy as staining your pout.
