No Bright Nail Polish and Other Weird Beauty Rules Meghan Markle Must Follow Now That She’s a Part of the British Royal Family

As the newest member of the British royal family, Meghan Markle has a lot to do before her royal wedding. First order of business: Learning (and following) all of the family’s weird rules. That said, as a woman in the royal family, some of the most important rules involve her beauty.

From the way she has to wear her hair to the only nail polish color accepted by the Queen, we share the strict (and somewhat unnecessary) beauty rules Meghan Markle must follow now that she’s part of the British royal family.

1. Blowouts are a must

Known to get her hair blown out a few times a week, Kate Middleton is no stranger to the clean-cut beauty rules of the British royal family. And now, Meghan Markle will have to follow suit (hence why her hair looked so perfect during the royal engagement photocall).

2. Natural makeup, always

While women in the royal family like to wear bright colors — particularly, the Queen — you’ll never see them in bright-colored makeup. When it comes to eyeshadows, blush, and even lipstick, royal women must keep their makeup looks natural and modest.

3. Hair must always look neat … even when pulled back in a ponytail

While ponytails are an accepted hairstyle in the royal family, they aren’t an invitation for messy hair. One of the biggest royal family beauty rules? Hair must always be neat, even when tied on top of your head — though a high ponytail is unlikely. Like her future sister-in-law, Meghan Markle will most likely stick to the chic middle or low ponytail.

4. Natural nail polish, or no nail polish

One of the Queen’s biggest pet peeves? Bright-colored nail polish. A strict rule amongst all royal women, Meghan Markle will have to kiss fun manicures goodbye and opt for a more natural look from here on out.

5. Pink nail polish is okay

Speaking of nail polish, pink nail polish is acceptable, so long as it’s “Ballet Slipper” from Essie. Reportedly the Queen’s favorite nail polish shade, the soft pink hue has been worn by women in the royal family on a number of occasions.

6. Nails must also be neatly groomed

In addition to color, there are strict rules on how nails must look, too. Nails must be cut and neatly groomed. And no royal woman would dare think to exit Kensington Palace with chipped nails.

7. Modesty is non-negotiable

Like the royal family’s infamous style rules, modest beauty is key — and, it’s non-negotiable. Women in the royal family must always look smart (the British royal family’s word of choice for posh), put-together, and naturally elegant.

At the very least, this protects their future selves from picture proof of the cringe-worthy beauty trends they once adored (we wish we could say the same for us).

8. No cleavage

Another fashion rule the British royal family must follow? No cleavage. That said, Princess Diana was known to show lower necklines from time-to-time. To avoid showering her cleavage, she would place her clutch over her chest when climbing out of the car.

9. Hats must be worn to all formal daytime events

When attending formal daytime events, all women must wear hats or fascinators.

10. She can’t travel without an all-black outfit

There are many style rules a member of the royal family must follow, including packing an all-black outfit every time she travels. The rule is in place to ensure that the royals are properly dressed should a sudden death occur while they are away from home.

11. She will be allowed to wear a tiara after 6 p.m.

As far as crown jewels go, once Meghan Markle is a married woman, she will be allowed to wear a tiara. Only married women in the royal family can wear tiaras. And when wearing a tiara, they must sit in the middle of the head at a 45-degree angle.

Another silly British royal family rule she must follow? When the clock strikes 6 p.m. at an indoor event, she will have to change her hat or fascinator to a tiara.
