We’ve all experienced a grooming emergency or two. It happens at the worst possible time, it often feels like there’s no quick solution, and it messes up your normal grooming routine. To help spare you from as many grooming problems as possible, we’ve compiled a list of solutions that will hopefully help the next time an emergency strikes.
1. You ran out of shaving cream
The fix: If you’re a man who likes to keep a clean-shaven mug, running out of shaving cream can certainly seem like an emergency. But fear not: You can shave sans cream by using soap, conditioner, or lotion after you’ve taken a shower, says The Art of Manliness. Although these three products are not meant to be used as a shaving cream, they’ll get the job done by allowing the razor to glide over your face without the consequence of razor burn or cuts. Also, by taking a shower first, you’ll soften the hairs making it easier. If you can, use a new razor blaze to get as clean of a shave as you can.
2. You’re without any hair product
The fix: While we can help you out with this one, just keep in mind that you’re probably not going to find anything that works as well as the real deal (unless you have shea butter or beeswax lying around, which we’ll assume you don’t). To tame your mane, GQ recommends using a touch of hand lotion to achieve a relaxed and smooth style. You can also use petroleum jelly if you’re aiming for a structured look. Use a small amount, and run it through your hair beginning at the root. Finally, if spray is your go-to, you can make your own sea salt spray by mixing a teaspoon of salt with soda water.
3. You woke up with a blemish
The fix: It tends to happen unexpectedly, and when it does, you usually don’t have any acne products on hand. When this happens, Roy Grekin, director of the Dermatologic Surgery and Laser Center at the University of California, San Francisco, tells The Wall Street Journal, that your best bet is to try to flatten and minimize the redness without popping it. “The best thing you can do is get a hold of as potent a corticosteroid or cortisone cream as you can,” he said. It’s the same stuff you use for rashes and cuts. Dab a little bit on there. Try finding the highest dosage of hydrocortisone cream you can get, which is 1% without a prescription, and pick up benzoyl peroxide. Be sure to do this before bed and when you get up in the morning. To increase the potency of the creams, cover your blemish with a Band-Aid — until you get to work at least.
If you can’t get a hold of one of these (or don’t want to use steroid creams on your face), Glamour recommends icing the area where the blemish is for five to 10 minutes, following it with a drop of Visine. The Visine works to restrict your blood vessels to temporarily dull the redness of your pimple. Dot it on, and let it dry.
4. You ran out of shampoo (and conditioner)
The fix: While there are benefits to cutting back the shampoo, there are times when you really need it and don’t have it. NBC News shares a quick fix: Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 cup of water (up the ratio if needed). Make sure the baking soda is dissolved before you scrub it into your hair. Rinse it out, then follow with an apple cider vinegar solution using the same ratio, and you’ve got yourself a clean mane.
As for the conditioner, you can try coconut oil, which is chemical-free and full of fatty acids that will repair your damaged hair just as well as leave-in conditioner treatments. Using a tablespoon or more, depending upon the length of your hair, rub it between you hands to warm it up and run it through your hair. Leave it in for an hour, and then rinse. Another plus: It helps with dandruff.
