10 Stars You Need to Watch on the Red Carpet This Season
Now that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the nominees for the 89th Academy Awards, awards season is officially in full swing. Many people are likely scrambling to catch La La Land, Moonlight, and Hacksaw Ridge before the season ends, but if you clicked on this story, you’re probably just as concerned with the red carpet fashion.
Though the Golden Globes and SAG Awards came and went, there are still more to come. With a red carpet packed with seasoned stars and emerging actors, we can only expect the fashion will be just as diverse and jaw-dropping as the incredible talents being celebrated. To make your next awards show viewing party easier, here are 10 stars we predict will make waves on the red carpet this season.
1. Emma Stone
With leading roles in several award-winning movies and two Oscar nods of her own, Emma Stone has officially graduated from red carpet rookie to award season mainstay. While other starlets may be satisfied wearing a traditional (read: boring) column dress, we can always count on Stone to bring something new to the red carpet. Whether she drapes a blazer over a semi-sheer gown, sports an unapologetically girly look from Valentino, or tries her luck with a trendy slip, Stone has fun with fashion and is never afraid to take risks. This year, she’s an Oscar front-runner and the leading lady of one of the biggest movies, so there’s more daring looks where those past ones came from.
2. Natalie Portman
To mere mortals, the idea of dressing to the nines week after week sounds exhausting. Doing it while pregnant? Forget about it. But if anyone can take on this task with grace and style, it’s Natalie Portman.
The actress was pregnant with her first child, Aleph, back when she took home the Oscar for her chilling performance in Black Swan six years ago. A vision in brands like Rodarte and Azzaro, Portman topped just about every best dressed list that season. If the Jackie O.- esque Prada dress she wore to the Globes was any indication, we’re in for a real sartorial treat this year. We hope the expecting star takes home the gilded statue for her spot-on portrayal of the former First Lady, but it looks like we’ll have to settle with some really great eye candy for now.
3. Amy Adams
Audrey Hepburn and Givenchy. Jennifer Lawrence and Dior. The notion of celebrities partnering up with major fashion houses for movies and awards season is a tale as old as time — and we’re anticipating some really fantastic partnerships this year. Take Amy Adams, for example. The actress starred in two Oscar nominated films this year: sci-fi hit Arrival and the beautiful, yet unsettling, Nocturnal Animals. The latter was directed by designer-turned-filmmaker Tom Ford, so while we can’t confirm Adams will be wearing Ford’s designs, it’s likely. The actress looks stunning in just about anything, and Ford is known for his exquisite designs and off-the-cuff, sexy glamour. Together, it’s a match made in sartorial heaven.
4. Ruth Negga
We haven’t seen an emerging actress turn into an A-lister and bonafide style icon overnight since Lupita Nyong’o in 2014, but here’s hoping Ruth Negga is next. Though relatively unknown, she’s already made waves in the fashion industry. Not only did she stun in a sleek metallic Louis Vuitton frock, she also scored the cover on Vogue.
Whether she’s dressed to the nines at an awards show or keeping it casual at a press junket, Negga perfectly captures this modern bohemian spirit that’s natural, eclectic, and surprisingly refined. Only time will tell if Negga’s sartorial choices can beat Nyong’o’s infamous Ralph Lauren cape dress, but we’re rooting for her.
5. Chrissy Teigen
Wondering why this model, social media starlet, and all around funny girl is on this list? Allow us to explain. Unless you’re living underneath a rock, you know Chrissy Teigen is married to John Legend, who’s one of the executive producers of La La Land. Since the film is expected to sweep the entire season, you can expect Legend (and his lovely wife) will be all over the red carpet scene.
Plus, Legend is a musician, which means they’ll likely make an appearance at the Grammys, too. She nailed the body-hugging sequined look last year (while pregnant!), and we hope she takes this opportunity to up the fashion ante. What would make us really happy is if were to see her in an elevated pants look, similar to the show-stopping number above.
6. Michelle Williams
For as long as we can remember, Michelle Williams has ruled every red carpet she’s stepped on. The Manchester by the Sea star has this unique ability to wear incredibly classic and feminine outfits, but always gives them an on-trend twist. At the same time, her looks never feel gimmicky. Instead, they’re sophisticated. She’s already sported a choker at this year’s Golden Globes, and we’re excited to see which trend she’ll conquer next.
7. Viola Davis
Out of all the beautiful and stylish stars on the red carpet, nobody can wear color better than Viola Davis. From vibrant oranges, to versatile neutrals, to sultry burgundies, it feels like the Fences star has worn every color in the rainbow. Normally, that level of predictability would be boring; however, she always experiments with different necklines and hems.
We’re thrilled to see Davis’ work in Fences celebrated, but if we’re being completely honest, we’re even more excited to see what she wears to each event. Davis already wowed critics and viewers alike with a cheery yellow Michael Kors dress, so her sartorial future is looking bright — no pun intended.
8. Janelle Monáe
Love it or hate it, no awards season is complete without that one celebrity who brings some thought-provoking looks to the red carpet. Whether she’s wearing polka dots to the Golden Globes or a boyish tuxedo to a concert, singer and star of Oscar-nominated Hidden Figures knows how to make a statement. While she doesn’t always make it onto our best dressed lists, we appreciate her sheer confidence to wear what she really wants to wear. This season, we’re hoping Monáe sparks some great fashion conversation with her over-the-top outfits.
9. Naomie Harris
There’s a fine line between looking sultry and too skimpy, but Naomie Harris knows how to teeter on that line. The Moonlight actress is smart about her fashion choices: She’ll highlight one body part and keep the rest covered up. As a result, she looks chic and age-appropriate. Harris’ style tactic may seem obvious to some, but we can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen a celebrity try too hard. Hopefully, she’ll stay true to her style, but take some risks with her looks.
10. Donald Glover
Women aren’t the only ones who can steal the spotlight on the red carpet. Over the past few years, more male actors have been experimenting with different colors, textures, and silhouettes. While we’re excited to see a lot of guys pull out the stops on the red carpet, Donald Glover ranks highest on our list. Wearing a brown velvet suit and purple tie to the Golden Globes puts a fashion target on your back. But between his confidence and the perfectly executed suit, Glover ended up topping our best dressed list. A basic black suit can get so boring, and we really wish more guys strayed away from the norm. Glover is the star and creator of hit show Atlanta, so why can’t he add “style trailblazer” to his growing resume?
