10 States Where People Look Older Than They Actually Are

Ask any dermatologist, and you’ll learn many factors affect how your skin will age. You can thank your genetics, diet, skin care routine, and even luck if you look in the mirror and love what you see.

Alen, a company that sells air purifiers, reports you can also count air quality, stress, sleep, and humidity as factors that will determine whether you look older or younger than you really are. And interestingly enough, people in some states fare better than  others when it comes to the apparent age of their skin.

Ahead, check out the states Alen found are the worst to live in if you want to look younger. Does your state make the list?

10. West Virginia

  • West Virginia ranks third worst for sleep and air quality.

We start the list with West Virginia, which Alen puts in 10th place among the states where people have premature signs of aging. “West Virginia may be Wild and Wonderful, but not so much in the aging department,” the company explains. The state ranks third worst for both sleep and air quality, and that takes a toll on the complexions of West Virginians.

Further, YouBeauty reports people in West Virginia showed the biggest range in skin age. That means some people look younger than they are while others look older.

9. Oklahoma

  • Oklahoma has the third worst air quality in the country.

Next on the list comes Oklahoma, a state where many people have signs of premature aging. Alen explains this state has the third worst air quality in the nation. But that’s not the only factor to blame. The state also has the third worst sleep averages. And it ranks as the 16th highest in terms of levels of stress.

YouBeauty calls out Oklahoma as one of the states with the oldest-looking skin in the entire United States — not a distinction you probably want your home state to earn! In fact, residents of Oklahoma look three years older than their actual age, thanks to their skin.

8. Indiana

  • Residents’ skin looks an average of two years older than their actual age.

If you want to look younger than you really are, Alen doesn’t recommend living in Indiana. The company reports this state has the fifth worst air quality in America. Plus, it has the 19th worst levels of stress. That combination can have some serious negative effects on your body, including on your complexion.

YouBeauty found an average skin age of two years older than its actual age, something none of us wants to see in the mirror.

  • The state has the seventh worst air quality in the country.

Alen cites Maryland’s air quality as one of the reasons the state lands on the list of worst in the country for your skin. “This state has the seventh worst air in the nation — something we know is bad for lungs, skin, and premature signs of aging,” the company explains. At least Marylanders rank as the 18th most well-rested and relaxed in America, which may offset some of the effects of the air quality.

According to YouBeauty, people in Maryland have complexions that look at least a year older than their actual age.

  • People in Kentucky look an average of two years older than they are.

Kentucky comes next on the list of the worst states for aging because, as Alen puts it, “the people here are actually some of the most sleep deprived and stressed in America.” Sleep deprivation and stress not only have short-term effects on your day, but also long-lasting effects on your complexion.

According to YouBeauty’s survey data, people in Kentucky look an average of two years older than they actually are, thanks to their complexions.

  • Residents have the third highest stress in the country.

Alabama makes the top five on Alen’s list of the worst states for your skin. The reason? Alabama’s residents “are the third most stressed out in the country,” which has a terrible effect on your complexion. The states also ranks as the ninth worst for air quality. And the combination of bad air and high stress doesn’t seem to have good effects on aging.

YouBeauty’s data indicated that in Alabama, people’s skin looks two years older than their actual age.

4. Delaware

  • The state has the 11th worst air quality.

Delaware is a small state, but it’s right up there with some of the bigger states in terms of terrible air quality. Alen reports Delaware has the 11th worst air quality and “pumps a lot of bad stuff into its air.” That’s why the state lands fourth on the list of the worst states for aging. However, Alen adds, “There is one silver lining. Delaware has the 22nd least stressed-out residents in the U.S.”

YouBeauty’s data indicates in Delaware, residents’ skin looks about two years older, on average, than their real age.

3. Utah

  • Utah has the worst air quality in the country.

Alen reports that Utah “has been shamed for having the worst air quality in the country.” You might think of the state for its gorgeous mountains, ski resorts, and amazing national parks. And Alen reports those stretches of open spaces help counteract Utah’s air quality problem. However, the extremely low humidity state doesn’t help your complexion.

The bright side? Utah ranks in the top 10 for the least stressed and least sleep-deprived residents. Plus, YouBeauty’s data showed respondents in Utah looked just a year older than their actual age, which doesn’t sound so bad!

2. Georgia

  • Georgia has the second worst air quality in the country.

Alen reports Georgia has the second worst air quality in America (“probably no thanks to emissions-happy Atlanta,” the company notes). Air quality can have a major impact on your complexion, and people in Georgia can look older than they are thanks to the poor air quality.

But fortunately, YouBeauty doesn’t think things in Georgia look quite so bad. The publication’s survey found residents of the state look a year, on average, older than their actual age. That definitely is better than a two- or three-year difference!

  • Residents look an average of two years older than their age.

Alen characterizes Tennessee as “the capital for premature aging.” In all four categories the company evaluated — air quality, humidity, stress, and sleep — Tennessee ranks in the top 10 worst.

YouBeauty agrees with Alen’s assessment. According to the publication’s data, people in Tennessee have complexions that add an average of two years to their actual age.
