Are You Brave Enough to Try These Terrifying (but Effective) Beauty Treatments?

Experiencing a beauty treatment for the first time can be scary for a number of reasons. One: Even though the professional explained what your treatment entails, you don’t really know what to expect. And two: If it’s anything invasive, anticipating the results can be nerve-racking.

That said, there is a whole category of beauty treatments that are terrifying from the get-go and require a certain amount of trust (and bravery) in the person performing them. From treatments that use your own blood to trending facials that make your skin look like beef jerky to the one beauty treatment you should never try, we share the most terrifying (but, effective) beauty treatments, ahead.

1. Vampire Facelift

When it comes to younger skin, Vampire Facelifts are a Hollywood go-to. In fact, the $1,500 treatment is a must-have for stars like Kim Kardashian and Keira Maguire.

If it’s steep price doesn’t scare you, maybe the treatment itself will. Trademarked by Dr. Charles Runels, the Vampire Facelift consists of having blood drawn from your arm, then separating the platelets with a centrifuge. What’s left? Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) that is then combined with either Restylane or Juvederm and injected into the face.

That said, there’s a reason why celebrities are willing to spend an arm and a leg on the terrifying beauty treatment. With its ability to stimulate collagen production and create new skin, the treatment helps get rid of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and more.

2. Dr. Barbara Sturm MC1 cream

Another beauty treatment that uses the healing power of your own blood to give you gorgeous, youthful-looking skin? Dr. Barbara Sturm’s MC1 cream. Founded by the doctor who pioneered vampire facials, the $1,400 the face cream is formulated with anti-inflammatory proteins from her patient’s blood. The result? A cream that can heal the skin and diminish fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging or imperfections.

3. Sheep placenta facials

Another beauty treatment celebrities swear by for perfect skin? Sheep placenta facials. Yes, you read that right. From Victoria Beckham to Kim Kardashian (who, apparently, is no stranger to terrifyingly weird beauty treatments), Hollywood’s most elite can’t get enough of the treatment.

Signature to Dr. Harold Lancer’s practice, the treatment utilizes sheep’s placenta stem cells — which, reportedly consists of similar cellular makeup to that of a human — to work on the complexion at a intracellular level. The results? Extremely hydrated, well-nourished skin.

4. Leech therapy

If you’ve ever wondered how Demi Moore stays so young (haven’t we all?) here’s your answer: leech therapy. If you can stomach having leeches on your complexion, this beauty treatment may be worth the horror. Popular in Europe, the treatment utilizes the blood-sucking abilities of leeches to — you guessed it — suck blood from the skin. But, that’s not all. While the slimy creepy crawlers are feasting on their victim’s blood, they also release enzymes that work to remove toxins from the blood.

5. Bird poop facials (aka, geisha facials)

If you think celebrities will stop at leeches and placentas, you’re in for a rude — read: gross — awakening. Somewhere down the line, celebrities (and regular civilians) started putting bird poop on their complexion in hopes of brighter and clearer skin.

The Japanese nightingale facial is popular amongst celebrities (Victoria Beckham is a big fan) for its abilities to brighten the look of the skin and get rid of acne. First used by 17th century geishas, the 100% natural facial consists of dehydrated bird droppings that are used as an exfoliator to lift off dead skin buildup and reveal healthier, more radiant-looking skin.

6. Hanacure All-In-One Facial

If you spend a lot of time on social media, you may have noticed a trending Korean beauty face mask called Hanacure All-In-One Facial circulating around. From bloggers to celebrities, everyone has been raving about it’s ability to give you more youthful-looking skin. The terrifying part? When it dries, your skin looks mummified. That said, the results are worth it.

Drew Barrymore took to Instagram to share a photo of her in the dried mask and a rave review. Stating, “this is a @hanacureeffect mask. When you take it off you are 10 years younger. You paint it on with a brush. It starts to dry. It pulls. It gets so tight that it literally pulls your face. See above. But, it makes you look so fresh when you wash it off. And it’s so effective. Thank you @crystalmeers for the info that’s changed my life.”

8. Laser hair removal

It’s no secret that laser hair removal has grown in popularity. That said, the treatment itself can be a little scary. For starters, the laser gets really hot and at times can feel as if your skin is on fire. The upside? The treatment only lasts about 10-15 minutes (and you can take breaks if you get too uncomfortable).

Formulated to look like a lip gloss, lip plumpers like Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme ($28) can help you achieve bigger, fuller-looking lips without the risk of causing harm to your pout.

Injections can be scary, but not all are alike. Xeomin — similar to Botox — is a type of Neurotoxin that is about as painless as it is effective. Once injected, the prescription medication works to block chemicals that cause muscle contractions in order to smooth out fine lines and help prevent new ones from forming.

While at-home microneedling (aka, derma-rolling) is terrifying by its own right, in-office microneedling is a little bit more intense. That said, there is an upside to the scary beauty treatment. By seeking a professional for this procedure, you’re in much better hands and can see the results you’re looking for.

12. Microblading

Step aside eyebrow tattooing, there’s a new way to achieve perfect brows. Microblading is hot right now and with good reason. Similar to eyebrow tattoos — only, less scary and less permanent — microblading is a special type of tattooing that uses a special handheld device and mimics the natural hairs in your brows (rather than drawing the outline of your brow and filling it in). The catch: Microblading doesn’t last forever! Depending on the individual, microblading can last around three years (as opposed to forever).

So, while getting your eyebrows permanently applied may sound scary, the semi-permanent aspect of microblading doesn’t sound half as scary.

Considered a type of deep-tissue massage, there are many reasons to try this seemingly scary (yet, totally worth it) treatment. Including: to decrease inflammation, better blood flow, relaxation, and pain.

15. Tanning beds

As far as scary treatments go, just because they’re effective, doesn’t mean you should try it. Case in point: tanning beds. They may give your skin a gorgeous, fake tan, but they can also cause serious harm to your body. According to the Mayo Clinic, “tanning beds emit UVA rays — which might increase the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.”

When it comes to fake tans, don’t risk it. Instead of getting inside the glowing coffin, try out a spray tan or self-tanning lotion. Your skin will thank you for it.
