From their cosmetic lines to fashion brands, the Kardashian women have had a major impact on the way modern women dress and look. That said, their influence on women’s looks goes beyond the surface and into the realm of plastic surgery. So much so that many plastic surgeons have an official name for the recent trend of Kardashian-esque enhancements: The Kardashian effect.
We sat down with Dr. Wright Jones, Founder of Muse Plastic Surgery, to find out more on what the most requested procedures are, what the Kardashian effect actually is, who is influenced by it, and more. Find out what he had to say, ahead.
Brazilian butt lift
According to Dr. Jones, the Kardashians have influenced an array of plastic surgery procedures — one of the most popular ones being the Brazilian butt lift. With a focus on enhancing the overall size, shape, and perkiness of the backside, the Brazilian butt lift can help patients achieve a Kim K. backside without the squats and, well, genetics.
Another procedure that has seen an incline in popularity? Lip augmentations. If you look at early photos of the Kardashian and Jenner sisters, you may notice a significant change in the shape of their lips. Kylie Jenner in particular has gone from having a very small upper lip to a full, plump pout.
While many celebrities have inspired breast implant trends — think: Pamela Anderson — the Kardashians are the latest to do so. According to Dr. Jones, there has been a rise in breast implant popularity, as more and more women seek Kardashian-worthy curves.
Now that we’ve gone over what procedures the Kardashian women have influenced the most, continue reading to find out more about the Kardashian effect.
What is the ‘Kardashian effect?’
“The Kardashian effect is simple, enhance and embrace,” says Dr. Jones. “It is a paradigm that has shown women how to present themselves to the world after altering their bodies. The opinions about their appearance may vary, but the overwhelming influence in beauty and fashion is undeniable,” he adds.
The risk factors
As far as risk is concerned, Dr. Jones says the biggest risk is that “it is highly unlikely that the patient will look exactly like a particular celebrity.” And “although surgeons can make specific anatomic changes, there will still be numerous factors that cannot be altered,” he adds.
If that isn’t enough, as the years go on, the patient may not be happy with their cosmetic procedure. “Celebrities inspire trends and patients must be careful not to make a permanent change that they may dislike in five or ten years.”
The shocking truth about who it influences
As for who the Kardashian effect influences, younger women are more likely to be affected by the trend. And according to Dr. Jones, Millennial women are the ones who “most often reference a Kardashian feature,” as older individuals prefer more conservative changes.
The one upside to the Kardashian effect
When it comes to the Kardashians’ influence on plastic surgery, there are positives, too. One of the most positive effects the Kardashians and their plastic surgery habits have had on women is the self confidence they gain in both their bodies and capabilities. “I think the effect has taught women not only how to embrace curves, but also how beauty, brains, and success can coexist,” says Dr. Jones.
