The 1 Nail Polish Color Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Are Allowed to Wear, According to the Queen
When it comes to royal manicures, the queen of England has standards. And with all of the handshaking, waving, and signing of important documents, we don’t blame her. That said, her beauty rules don’t just stop at filing, shaping, and buffing — she’s got a thing about the color, too. So much so that she only wears on specific nail polish color.
Up ahead, we share the one — and the only — nail polish color Queen Elizabeth II approves of for Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and other women in the royal family.
1. Queen Elizabeth II only wears Essie nail polish
The queen is very particular about nail polish. And while it would make sense that she prefers an expensive, 18-karat gold nail lacquer, it’s actually quite the opposite. The queen’s go-to? Essie nail polish. At around $9 a pop, the popular nail care brand may be one of the most relatable — if not, the only relatable — thing about the queen.
2. Her favorite nail polish color is Essie’s Ballet Slippers
The queen of England doesn’t love just any Essie nail polish color. In fact, her favorite nail polish color is a light pink hue called Ballet Slippers.
3. Her hairdresser wrote a letter to Essie requesting the nail polish
According to Essie’s website, the queen’s hairdresser wrote a letter to Essie Weingarten herself and asked her to send a bottle of the nail lacquer, as it was the only nail polish color she would wear.
4. She’s been wearing it since 1989
The queen has been rocking Essie Ballet Slippers since 1989 and it’s still one of her favorite colors.
5. The polish is considered a cult classic
The queen isn’t the only person obsessed with the pale pink polish, from supermodel must-haves to movie quotes, Ballet Slippers has received an enormous amount of press throughout the years and is considered a cult-favorite.
6. Nude nail polish is also OK
While Ballet Slippers may be the only color the queen wears, she’s not opposed to nude nail polish. If Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle wish to wear Butter LONDON in Steady On, or Zoya Nail Polish in Cala, they can. In fact, as long as their nails are painted in a nude or neutral color, they’re in the clear.
7. How your nails look matter to the queen
In addition to color, the queen has strict rules against chipped or unmanicured nails. Women in the British royal family must keep their nails cut and groomed at all times.
