8 Times Tom Petty Proved His Style Was as Iconic as His Music

While he may have been known as a singer and songwriter, Tom Petty was also a style icon. Known for his Western hippie style, the music legend was often seen in a mix of patterns, fabrics, and — of course — a top hat from time to time.

From floral neck ties to fringe vests, we share some of Tom Petty’s most stylish outfits, ahead.

1. That time he wore a space suit

There’s no telling whether Petty was on another planet during his 1985 Pack Up The Plantation tour, but one thing’s for certain: This suit certainly was. Known for his out-of-this-world music and style choices, the music legend rocked it in a black blazer and pants covered in outer space patches.

2. The sequined hat he wore on his Strange Behavior tour

Petty was no stranger to hats. Often sporting a top hat or a paper boy hat — like this sequined one — the musician sure knew how to make a bold statement. Worn during the 1989 Strange Behavior tour, Petty’s style definitely evolved from the ’70s to the ’80s, but it still stayed true to him as an artist.

3. Those heeled boots

When we think of the music legend’s style, the first thing that comes to mind is “eclectic.” Looking as eclectic as ever in his beloved top hat and a pair of heeled boots, Petty rocked out with The Heartbreakers at the Knebworth Festival in 1978.

4. This cowboy-chic ensemble

With the ’70s behind him, Tom Petty still stayed true to his Western hippie style in Italy in 1987. In a striped button up and fringed leather vest, Petty gave hippie a whole new meaning in the late ’80s.

5. His many top hats

While he may have been known for his long blonde hair, the music legend was also known to switch things up with a top hat from time to time. We love this portrait of Petty from 1991 in a short ‘do, top hat, and round glasses.

6. His plethora of printed shirts

Petty had no shortage of prints in his closet — particularly printed shirts. We love the way he always added colorful patterns to his wardrobe.

7. This striped jacket

When we think of Tom Petty, we think of the cool guitars, long hair, and funky jackets. One of our favorites? This groovy pinstriped jacket he wore while touring California in 1977.

8. This floral getup

Even as he aged, Tom Petty stayed true to his hippie style. While performing in Tulsa in 2014, the music legend rocked a pair of boots, faded jeans, a floral shirt, funky-printed neck tie and vest — paired with his signature long hair — proving you can take the guy out of the 1970s, but you can’t take the 1970s out of the guy.
