3 Types of Clothing You Should Never Buy From Amazon

Amazon is one of the largest internet-based retailers in the world, and is well-known for its Kindle, lightning fast shipping (especially if you’re an Amazon Prime member), selling virtually anything you can think of, and has fairly recently extended into on-demand video and production of original shows. It’s no wonder CEO Jeff Bezos’s net worth skyrocketed over the summer. Even Amazon has taken over the way we shop, there are some things, like specific types of clothing, that you should never buy on the site. Here are three types of clothing you should steer clear of when you’re shopping on Amazon.

1. Pants

Generally speaking, it’s tough to buy pants online from a single retailer, and it’s even harder to buy them from Amazon when there are so many different brands with so many different sizing options. Slate writer Farhad Manjoo says purchasing pants on Amazon is an overwhelmingly negative experience, especially once the pants arrived. Even though he ordered his size, they didn’t fit, saying, “Depending on the brand and the style, a given waist and inseam length fits differently from a supposedly identically sized pair in another brand.” A lot of the sizing on the site just seems random.

Though customer reviews on a product help, Manjoo writes, “If Amazon cataloged its clothing by size, and if it used your measurements to predict apparel that would fit you, its sprawling clothing store would be pretty hard to resist — the promised land of perfect pants that we’ve all been searching for.”

2. Popular clothing brands

There’s no arguing that Amazon is a great place to shop for products, but apparel from popular brands is not one of them. Your best bet is to comparison shop online, especially if you know the item you’re looking for. Kristin Cook, managing editor of Ben’s Bargains, a website that tracks online deals, tells Kiplinger Amazon is not a great choice for really popular brands like Nike, Levis, and so on. Amazon rarely ever marks down its brand-name apparel inventory, and when they do, discounts won’t go over 20%, she said. It’s better to shop brand-name clothing from stores that offer coupons or specialize in marking their apparel down each season.

3. Shoes

Much like pants, it’s very difficult to figure out how accurate sizing is for shoes. Again, there is no standard sizing with Amazon because they carry various brands and designer shoes. “Amazon is not the greatest place to shop for clothes and shoes,” Erin Konrad, a spokesperson for CouponPal.com, told MarketWatch. In addition to sizing and returns, Konrad says a lot of brand names that you find on Amazon are available at other retailers like Nordstrom and Macy’s. And it’s those retailers that offer coupons and promotions that will save you more money.
