Want to Look Taller? Here’s How to Do It Using Your Wardrobe

Are you of smaller stature? Well, good news. Some of the most famous and powerful men in history were short: from Napoleon Bonaparte, at 5-foot-6, to Danny DeVito, who clocks in at an even 5 feet. These men may be short, but their height or lack thereof did not hinder them from achieving great things and making memorable names for themselves. If you happen to be a gentleman of small stature, you should embrace it and not let it impede you in any way, least of all when it comes to style. Thus, it’s important to remember that being short doesn’t mean you have to look short. When dressed correctly in flattering attire, clothing can actually help you look taller.

Here is your Cheat Sheet to style tips that will make you look taller. This way you can own your height and work with what you have.

1. Stick to a monochrome palette

Wearing a monochrome color scheme, which Fashion Beans explains is when you contrast shades rather than colors, will help to streamline your look and give the illusion of height. A monochrome palette can be a fantastic go-to. Keep this in mind though when dressing: Although the darker the color the better, it is best to steer clear of all black because it will have the opposite effect on you and can actually leave you looking shorter. If you decide to mix different hues of the same colors, be sure to keep the darker tones on the lower half of your body and the lighter ones on top. This will in effect lengthen your look and draw the eye upward, which is exactly what you’re going for.

2. A tailor is your greatest tool

Finding a great tailor is one of the only fashion tips you will ever need, no matter your size or height. If your clothes fit correctly, then everything else seems to fall into place. When it comes to looking taller, fit is more important than you realize, and it’s essential if you’re short. Just remember this: Loose, baggy clothing on a shorter man will make you look even tinier and like your clothes are trying to eat you alive. This is why it’s so important to find and enlist a fantastic tailor.

When you go to your tailor, make sure to let them know the kind of look you’re going for, which is slim and tall. Once your clothes are tailored to perfection you’ll immediately realize, say when you wear a fitted coat, jacket, or blazer, just how much it helps to build up your shoulders, in turn adding to your height. Another tip: Keeping your blazer buttoned creates a slim silhouette that will make your chest look bigger and your waist smaller.

3. Try vertical stripes and V-necks

As a rule, horizontal stripes make people appear wider. The opposite is also true: Vertical stripes make you appear longer. Try opting for clothing that has evenly spaced vertical lines that can be found in printed patterns on shirts and in fabrics like corduroy. There are even fantastic blazers that have very tasteful vertical line patterns that will not only make you appear taller but also stylish.

Additionally, opting for suit blazers that create a natural V, or wearing a V-neck tee or sweater, not only draws the eye upward but makes your shoulders look more pronounced. Again, this adds to the illusion of height.

4. Do not wear long shirts

Shirts should never run past your hip bone. If you’re wearing a button-down shirt, you should be tucking it in most of the time, as it allows for a slimmer line and makes your legs look longer. Not all shirts are tuck-able, like a T-shirt. In that case, make sure your T-shirts do not run past your hips. Anything longer will make you look stubby.

5. Keep your accessories on top

Keep your accessories to a minimum and below your chest. In order to appear taller, you want the eyes of whoever’s looking at you to sweep upward. Getting people to look up is one of the best ways to get them to register tallness in whatever they’re looking at; this means avoiding anything distracting on your lower half. It’s best for you to steer clear of flashy watches, big belts, flashy shoes, and of course, bright colors. Esquire recommends you stick to this mantra: “The lower you go, the simpler, and darker, you should go too.”

6. Maintain perfect posture

Standing up straight is the quickest way to add an extra inch to your height. Maintaining great posture is a great way to lengthen your stature in less than two seconds, no matter what you’re wearing or how you’re feeling. It is also essential when it comes to exuding confidence and making all of these style tips work for you.
