5 Wardrobe Staples Meghan Markle Loves, Including 3 She Can’t Wear Now That She’s Royalty
Meghan Markle has had plenty of major style moments and we expect many more in the future. As a woman who has learned a lot about clothing during her time as an actress, she’s learned what she likes and what she doesn’t. Ahead, see what wardrobe staples populate Meghan’s wardrobe and learn what she can’t wear now that she’s a royal (pages 5 – 8).
Wardrobe staple: statement coats
- Fun fact: Female members of the royal family can’t take their coats off in public because it’s considered an “unladylike action,” according to Mental Floss.
Meghan Markle’s collection of outwear has increased a lot since she’s been attending events with Prince Harry and the rest of the British royal family. She’s worn a green plaid check coat by Burberry, a navy coat with white piping by J. Crew, and a duster coat by Aritzia. See more affordable brands Meghan Markle’s a fan of, here.
Hint: Wear this type of jewelry to replicate Meghan’s style.
Wardrobe staple: delicate jewelry
- Fun fact: Jewelry brand, Cleave and Company, made Meghan Markle’s engagement ring, according to CNN.
Meghan Markle’s been a fan of delicate jewelry for years. Even her character on Suits wore delicate jewelry. Duplicate Meghan’s jewelry style by layering earrings or rings. Pandora makes a great dupe for her diamond rose earrings, which cost $65. Meghan’s original earrings were by Vanessa Tugendhaft and cost nearly $3,000, according to Bustle. They sold out in 10 minutes after Meghan Markle wore them to a public appearance.
Hint: Say ‘bye’ to your toes.
Wardrobe staple: close-toed heels
- Fun fact: Meghan Markle has an extensive shoe collection.

As a royal, Meghan Markle has to dress in more formal attire. That means swapping sandals for close-toed pumps. Markle is a big fan of Aquazzura shoes, which she wore to her engagement announcement. On the same occasion, she broke a royal fashion rule (page 7).
Hint: Meghan’s made this accessory part of her royal wardrobe.
Wardrobe staple: crossbody handbags
- Fun fact: Young princes never wear pants, according to Mental Floss. That’s why Prince George has been often seen wearing shorts.
Meghan Markle has worn crossbody bags to a number of appearances. This is a break from royal tradition but not royal protocol, according to Today. Kate Middleton is known to carry clutches or bags with a top handle. And Princess Diana always carried a clutch. Meghan’s choice of a crossbody bag is a modern and relatable approach.
Hint: Meghan won’t wear her favorite jeans as much as a royal.
Wardrobe staple/can’t wear: skinny jeans
- Fun fact: Jeans are considered very casual wear for the royal family, according to BBC. Only acceptable for walking the dogs, not attending an event.
In her first public appearance with Prince Harry when she attended the Invictus Games in Toronto, Meghan Markle wore skinny jeans by Mother Denim. Since she debuted her distressed skinny jeans, they’ve continuously sold out and been restocked, according to Who What Wear. However, it’s unlikely Markle will wear these jeans now that she’s a duchess. Her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, hasn’t worn distressed jeans since becoming a duchess.
Hint: Meghan Markle had to get rid of nail polish.
Can’t wear: unnatural looking nail polish
- Fun fact: Kate Middleton wore nail polish by Essie in the shade, Allure, on her wedding day, according to Travel & Leisure.
Fake nails and colored nail polish are considered vulgar by the royal family, according to OK! Magazine. That’s why Queen Elizabeth II, Kate Middleton, and other members of the royal family only ever wear nude colors on their nails. In the past, Meghan’s worn dark colors on her nails to events. But she’s had to say goodbye to those shades in favor of nude colors approved by the queen.
Hint: Meghan broke this fashion rule multiple times.
Can’t wear: bare legs
- Fun fact: The queen supposedly keeps an extra pair of pantyhose in her purse.
Until March 2018, Meghan Markle ignored royal protocol when it came to nude pantyhose, according to Marie Claire. “The Queen’s only strict fashion rule is that women wear nude stockings underneath dresses or skirts,” Victoria Arbiter, a royal expert, told Insider. In March, Markle attended an event with the queen and finally wore nude pantyhose.
Hint: Meghan Markle can’t wear this style of shoe.
Can’t wear: wedges
- Fun fact: Kate Middleton wore a pair of Stuart Weitzman wedges when the queen wasn’t around, according to Mental Floss.
Meghan has an extensive shoe collection but now that she’s a member of the royal family, there’s one shoe style that is off limits. The queen particularly dislikes wedges, a source told Vanity Fair. “She really doesn’t like them and it’s well known among the women in the family.” Kate Middleton, a fan of wedges, hasn’t worn any in some time.
