12 Easy Ways to Save Money at Best Buy
Best Buy is a good place to get some great deals on electronics as long as you know what to look for. We may not be the biggest advocate of buying open box gadgets at Best Buy, since they aren’t repaired by the factory and have sometimes even been used as display models. But there are plenty of other great ways to save money at Best Buy, whether you’re stopping in for a small purchase or saving up for a big-ticket item.
In fact, there are some easy habits you can establish now so that you always get the best deal at Best Buy. Read on to check out our top recommendations on things to know and benefits to take advantage of, and you’ll be on your way to getting a great deal at Best Buy every time you shop.
1. Do your research first
As with any tech purchase, it’s important to get in the habit of researching your options online before you head to the store. Determine which features and specifications are important to you, and find out which brands and models are recommended by reviewers and groups like Consumer Reports. And if you’ve chosen a specific brand and model already, compare prices, add-ons, and warranties so that you know how Best Buy’s offer compares to those at other retailers.
2. Check out bundles and package deals
Whether you’re shopping for a new laptop or a new gaming console, it’s a good idea to determine whether Best Buy has any bundles that will package in the accessories or software you want and save you money. Gaming consoles, for instance, are often packaged with games, and buying everything separately can cost you significantly more than purchasing a package.
3. Think twice about buying accessories and cables
On the other hand, buying a new phone or laptop at Best Buy doesn’t mean that you need to stock up on accessories and cables at Best Buy, too. Unless you need something immediately, it’s a good idea to check your options online. Often, you’ll find a better deal on a phone case or an ethernet cable if you check Amazon, or even eBay. So if you’re looking to save money, don’t ever assume that the best deal is the one right in front of you.
4. Pass on the extended warranty
Best Buy offers extended warranties, called Geek Squad Protection, on a wide variety of devices. The idea is that Best Buy’s extended warranty “enhances your coverage for up to five years,” with optional coverage for things like accidental damage from handling. Best Buy offers Geek Squad Protection for appliances, cameras, car electronics, phones, computers, tablets, gaming consoles and handhelds, and other devices. But in most cases, it’s a good idea to pass on the extended warranty. In most cases, the manufacturer warranty is enough, and Consumer Affairs has received many consumer complaints about Best Buy’s extended warranties.
5. Join My Best Buy
It can be annoying to join rewards and loyalty programs at every store where you shop. But since many electronics are big purchases, joining My Best Buy is worth it. As a member, you earn points for each dollar you spend, and you can redeem those points for a reward certificate. You also get free two-day shipping from Best Buy’s website, plus access to sales and special offers, which can help you save money. Moving up to the Elite or Elite Plus tiers of the My Best Buy membership, which you can attain by spending $1,500 or $3,500 per calendar year, earns you more points, longer return and exchange periods, access to more deals and perks, and access to dedicated customer service lines. Additionally, if you’re a student, make sure to sign up for Best Buy’s College Student Deals.
6. Join the My Best Buy Gamers Club
Another membership you’ll want to sign up for if you’re a gamer is the My Best Buy Gamers Club. With a free membership, you’ll get twice the points on video game trade-ins, exclusive offers, reward certificates, and points on gaming consoles. If you upgrade to a $30 two-year membership, you’ll get 20% off new video game software, 10% bonus trade-in credit, 10% off preowned games, and other benefits.
7. Avoid shipping charges with store pickup
Another way to avoid paying expensive shipping charges is to use Best Buy’s free store pickup option. If the item you want to purchase is out of stock at your local Best Buy but is available online, you can use the Ship to Store option to get it delivered to your store without any shipping charges. You can also take advantage of the Friends & Family Pickup option, or even pick up your items at a Best Buy warehouse near you (which is a particularly convenient option if you’re buying a big appliance, not a small gadget).
8. Familiarize yourself with Best Buy’s price match guarantee
Comparison shopping is an important part of getting the best deal on a new gadget. But even if you find a better deal somewhere else, you can still make your purchase at Best Buy since the store offers a Price Match guarantee. If you find the same model at a lower price on Amazon, Bhphotovideo, Crutchfield, Dell, HP, Newegg, or TigerDirect, Best Buy will match the price either in store or by phone. There are exceptions and exclusions, including smartphones sold online and special daily, hourly, or holiday sales. And Best Buy will only match Amazon prices on items being sold by Amazon, not by third-party sellers. But price matching can save you money on a wide variety of purchases.
9. Be aware of Best Buy’s price adjustment policy
Also included in Best Buy’s price match guarantee is its policy of adjusting the price of your purchase if the price drops within the return and exchange period. That means that if you buy a device and then Best Buy puts it on sale, you’ll be able to get a refund for the difference. That doesn’t apply to the sales that Best Buy offers on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, for instance, but it can save you some money in the event of a price drop under normal circumstances.
10. Shop refurbished items
Though we aren’t big advocates of buying open box electronics from Best Buy, we’re big fans of saving money with refurbished items. You can check out the Best Buy Outlet online to save up to 40% on refurbished items, which have been repaired and “restored to a like-new state.” When you’re shopping online, you’ll notice that refurbished items are identified within the product name, and some are labeled “Refurbished” above the price.
11. Consider negotiating
Most people don’t think of Best Buy as the kind of store when you can negotiate the price of your purchase. But particularly if you’re buying an expensive item, there may be some room for negotiation. You can ask for a discount if you bundle items, or check if a manager will reduce the price of an item with damaged packaging. Additionally, shopping at the end of the month means that managers are making a final push to meet or exceed their sales goals, and may be more apt to offer you a discount.
12. Take advantage of Best Buy’s partnership with Energy Star
Whether you’re headed to Best Buy to purchase a new laptop, TV, refrigerator, or washer, you can save money by taking advantage of Best Buy’s partnership with Energy Star. As Best Buy’s website explains, Energy Star-certified products reduce energy usage, protect the environment, and save you money by meeting the energy efficiency guidelines of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Additionally, you can get rebates of up to $100 on the purchase of some Energy Star devices, which is an even bigger incentive to make your tech addiction a little more environmentally friendly.
