5 Ways to Get Cleaner and Healthier Skin After a Workout

Working out can improve your body, but it can also wreak havoc on your skin. You might feel great after a run or spin class, but your face, not so much. Bad post-workout skincare habits can lead to clogged pores, acne, blackheads, or even uncomfortable itchy dry skin. If your skin is suffering as much as your muscles are after a gym session, you aren’t taking care of it properly. However, with a little preparation, the right products, and a plan, you can ensure you have healthier skin after your workouts.

1. Prep before you workout

Before you hit the gym, clean your face with a mild cleanser. Use warm water and move your hands in a circular motion. When you are finished, splash cold water on your face a few times to close the pores. Then, use toner on a cotton ball or pad. If your workout was a hard one and all of this sounds like too much for you, at the very least, you can use face wipes pre- and post-workout. Burt’s Bees makes great wipes for every skin type. Just throw a package in your gym bag and you will be good to go.

2. Wash your hands

If there is one thing you do, this should be it. No matter what your workout is, whether it’s yoga, Pilates, weight lifting, or a good old-fashioned run on the treadmill, your hands will probably end up dirtier than a gas station bathroom. And it’s very likely you’re going to put your dirty hands all over your face at some point, like when you are wiping off your sweat. So, no matter where you are, no matter how much or how little time you have after your fitness session, just wash your hands when you are done. And don’t even think about washing your face without washing your hands first!

3. Take a short shower

Take off those sweaty clothes and head to the shower ASAP after your workout. Your skin will not only look better, but you will also feel better. A warm shower soothes tired and overworked muscles. But, while a shower is refreshing, don’t stay under the water for too long. Too much hot water can dry out your skin, stripping it of oils and moisture.

Also, don’t forget to wear shower shoes if you are showering at the gym to prevent athlete’s foot. There is nothing fun about fungus.

You need to shed some of that sweaty post-workout skin. So, don’t forget to exfoliate.
