11 Effective (and Delicious) Ways to Remedy Dry, Cracked Lips this Winter

We all want kissable lips, but winter’s cold, dry temperatures can do a number on our pretty pouts. To add insult to injury, some of those balms you’re using may be making your lips even more dry and chapped. As Everyday Roots points out, they often contain camphor, phenol, and menthol, which can create cracking even though they feel cool and refreshing.

Instead of wasting money on those products, check out these surefire ways to get soft, smooth lips that couldn’t be easier — or tastier, for that matter. From DIY treatments that take all-natural to the next level to simple products that will do your lips right, your pout will have the sweetest medicine ever with these 11 remedies.

1. Mint chocolate lip balm

Chocoholics, rejoice — you now have a chocolate fix for your lips. And this one is reminiscent of your favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream (or Girl Scouts thin mint cookies, as The Hippy Homemaker says). In a double boiler, melt 1 tablespoon cocoa butter with 1 tablespoon of beeswax pastilles. Then, mix in 3 tablespoons coconut oil and 10 chocolate chips (organic, fair trade chocolate chips are preferred). Finally, for that mint finish, add 25 drops of peppermint essential oil. Pour into lip balm tubes, recycled mint tins, or small glass jars, then let cool completely to solidify before using. You can also add ⅛ teaspoon of vitamin E oil to act as a natural preservative.

2. Coconut-vanilla lip balm

Vanilla is an iconic lip balm flavor, so make your own using a recipe from Radiant Life Catalog. Combine 2 tablespoons each of hydrating cocoa butter, nourishing coconut oil, and beeswax pastilles in a double boiler and stir until melted. Add 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. Then, pour the mixture into containers (tubes or tubs, depending on what you prefer), and place in refrigerator to set.

3. Strawberry lip balm

Want a lip balm that has real strawberry flavor? Look no further than this fruity lip balm from Brendid. Combine 1 tablespoon beeswax pastilles with ½ tablespoon each of nourishing sweet almond oil and coconut oil, plus ¼ cup freeze-dried strawberries (crushed and blended into a fine powder) in a double boiler. Once melted together, pour mixture through a fine mesh strainer and let cool before swiping on your lips for a tasty lip treat that provides a subtle, rosy tint.

4. Mint-sugar lip scrub

Sugar and mint

Sometimes balms aren’t enough to treat chapped, dry lips. For a lip scrub that’s delicious and effective any time of the year, all you really need is sugar, honey (it has natural healing properties!), and coconut oil. Stir together two tablespoons of sugar and one tablespoon each of the oil and honey until a paste forms. For an extra zing, Feelgood Style says you can add a drop of peppermint essential oil. Gently rub over your lips (and try not to lick them too much). The sugar gently exfoliates your lips while the oil and honey moisturize and nourish your pretty pout. Plus, there’s nothing like the invigorating rush of mint to pick you up on a dull, wintry day.

5. Cinnamon lip exfoliator and plumper

For those times you want something more warming than cooling to your lips, Hello Glow’s homemade lip scrub with cinnamon does the trick. This recipe uses the richness of brown sugar as its sweet, exfoliating base. Simply stir together two tablespoons of brown sugar, ½ tablespoon each of olive oil and raw honey, and ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon for a very tasty way to slough off dry, dead skin cells. Did we mention cinnamon is a natural lip plumper, too? The spice creates natural heat that will temporarily enhance your lips.

6. Kiwi surprise scrub

For a delicious burst of Vitamin C, put kiwi to use on your lips. The little seeds in kiwi make it an effective exfoliator. Follow The Makeup Dummy’s recipe and combine 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil, and 1 tablespoon of kiwi pulp. Rub the delightful green potion over your lips, then rinse off for a prettier pout in no time flat.

7. Cucumber

Cucumber slices aren’t just for your puffy, tired eyes. They can soothe and treat chapped lips for a fresh, tasty treatment. StyleCaster recommends slicing a cucumber into extra thin pieces and draping them atop your lips for five minutes to re-hydrate and restore lips that are feeling less than top notch.

8. Honey

It’s best to use less processed, raw honey if you can. Just wipe it across your lips several time a day — and try not to lick too much.
