If you’re like most men, perhaps you are feeling your work wardrobe could use some updating? This can easily be done with limited new inclusions or working with what you already have in your closet. It may seem a bit intimidating at first, but it can certainly be done and will seem like second nature once you get started. Consider these tips the next time you are planning out your work wardrobe for the week.
1. Take inventory
First things first, you have to know what you’re working with before you can figure out how to give your wardrobe new life. This is also a great opportunity to get a jump start on spring cleaning and get rid of items that are either worn out or no longer fit. Once you have figured out what you are keeping, you will have a good idea where to go from there. You will want to make sure you have the following:
- At least two pairs of dark dress pants.
- A few pairs of neutral colored chinos (olive, tan or brown).
- Button down shirts in a solid color is a must! It’s a good idea to include a white shirt and others in dark colors.
- Two pairs of shoes to select from ideally in a dark color like black or mahogany brown. One of the options should have a more laid back feel for days like casual Fridays.
- Including a structured blazer is a great layering option.
2. Get creative
Now that you know what is inside your closet you can find ways to revamp your look. So often we stick to the first few items in eye shot when deciding what to wear, by moving a few items from the back to the front it’s an easy way rediscover some hidden gems. Aim at matching things in a non-traditional way. If you normally wear a solid button down with a dark pair of pants, incorporate a striped shirt or plaid option, this usually works just as well and adds a bit of personality to your look. If you have never cuffed your sleeves, that is one of the easiest ways to give your favorite shirt a new look. Even adding a tie, handkerchief, scarf, or men’s accessory like a necklace or wrap bracelet can have you headed in the right direction.
3. Clothing swap
Remember when you would borrow your best friend’s jacket in college or high school? Well now there are several clothing swap websites available that allow you to rock new items at half the cost and some are free! Most of these sites tend to cater to women, but there are few out there that include men’s apparel as well. Sites like Swap.com also have choices for men. Another option is getting a few of your guy friends together, maybe before a night on the town and do a quick swap. This is really beneficial if you and your friends have a different sense of style, it will encourage you to step outside your comfort zone.
