Good news for newly insured Americans under the Affordable Care Act: Walgreen Co. (NYSE:WAG) has extended a program that helps provide 30-days worth of prescription medications at no upfront cost upon verification of eligibility until April 15, MarketWatch reports.
Many newly insured Americans under the Affordable Care Act are running into difficulty using their new coverage because they haven’t yet received a plan identification number from their insurer; in an effort to help ease the transition, Walgreens has agreed that it will provide up to one month of traditional, brand name, or generic medications at no upfront cost.
The program, which emphasizes consumer education, was originally initiated in partnership with GoHealth in October. At first, it was supposed to continue only through the end of January in order to help create a smooth transition for those Americans whose healthcare coverage as a result of the Affordable Care Act began on the first of January, but because many newly insured Americans have still not received plan identification numbers and/or have not yet registered (the deadline is March 31), Walgreens has extended the offer through mid-April.
“We’re committed to helping those who’ve signed up for coverage through state and federal marketplaces access their medications without interruption, and anticipate a growing need to leading up and following the March 31 enrollment deadline,” said Kermit Crawford, president of pharmacy, health, and wellness for Walgreens. “We’ll continue to support the newly insured and are also continuing our efforts to help simplify the enrollment process for those in our communities who may still be in need of insurance coverage,” according to MarketWatch.
GoHealth provides one-on-one support from a licensed GoHealth advisor to individuals still trying to sort out their healthcare options following the passage of the Affordable Care Act. GoHealth advisors can help eligible individuals shop and compare health insurance plans, as well as help them enroll and access necessary information and resources.
