5 Small Changes You Can Make to Be Healthier

It’s 2016, time to be your healthiest self. Being your healthiest self is not just about what you eat, or how much you work out, it’s a life change. While some people may only need to improve one area of their life in order to become a healthier version of themselves, others may need to change different aspects of their life.

And while life can often take us in a million different directions, it is good to sit and take time to reflect on what we need to work on. Based on this, we rounded out five different areas that you could improve on to make 2016 the year of your healthiest self.

1. Be realistic

We all have resolutions going into a new year, but the major difference between those who accomplish their new goals and those who do not is how realistic people are. When you think about your goal, think about how big or small of a goal it is, and then, based on that, create a realistic timeline.

According to Psychology Today you shouldn’t hesitate to seek expert advice, “An expert … can help you come up with a plan that is both safe and likely to be effective — preferably based on some sort of scientific evidence.”

By being realistic about your goals you will avoid excess stress that not accomplishing your goal, or trying to accomplish your goal too quickly, could cause. Set yourself up for success to be your healthiest self by starting with an attainable goal and timeline.

2. Get a little, give a little

Usually the people who are the happiest are the people who give as much as they have. Paying it forward is a great way to be happy and healthy. According to a study published in BMC Public Health, volunteering boosts mental health and can even help you live longer.

If you want to be healthier and have higher self-confidence, self-esteem, and just generally be a happier person, you may want to consider volunteering your time to a great charity or picking something that is important to you and helping out.

3. Unplug

In a world where technology is constantly consuming us, unplugging can do a lot to make us happier and healthier in everyday life. According to Leigh Steere, co-founder of Managing People Better, it is important to disconnect in order to reconnect.

Scheduling time to disconnect digitally can allow you to become more present to other people as well as to your environment. People who have their eyes on a screen are missing out on in-person connections with other people.” Steere says to US News & World Report.

Observation and being able to disconnect are key, according to Steere, to gaining new insights and informing you of what you might be missing out on. 

4. Go for a run

Not only does running make you feel great, but it also gives you time to think and be alone.

According to a study published in Behaviour Research and Therapy, running is a mood-booster that can help reduce anxiety, and it can be a natural pain reliever. So, hit the road and take some time for yourself. You won’t regret it. 

5. Think about your future health

Often we can get caught up in the moment, and although it is good to live in the moment, it is also wise to consider your future self and health. To be the healthiest you can be in the future, it is important to take care of yourself in the moment.

The key to making healthy decisions is to respect your future self. According to a Huffington Post article, a great way to think about health is to treat your body as if it were a friend or loved one. In a study at Stanford, those who saw pictures of their future self were more inclined to make smarter financial decisions and take care of themselves.
