5 Things All Fit Men Have in Common

Being fit is about embracing a lifestyle. Not only will you be happier and healthier for doing so, but if you fall off the wagon once and a while, you won’t beat yourself up over it because you know it’s part of living an overall fit life. Here are five things all fit men have in common.

They find a way to enjoy exercise

It’s difficult to stay fit if you don’t enjoy exercise, but lucky for you, fitness is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing and there are many different options. The Huffington Post says that the fittest people understand that and make it a point to find an exercise, or several, they enjoy so they don’t get bored. Bob Harper, television personality, personal trainer, author and devoted CrossFit fan takes exercise enjoyment to the next level, “For me, working out is a form of therapy, it’s cathartic for me, it’s a good stress reliever,” he told Parade in 2013. “I know that when I go to the gym I am taking care of myself and I know I’ll feel so much better afterwards.”

They get enough sleep

Being fit is not only about how often you work out. It’s also about sleep. Getting enough shut eye sounds like the most obvious thing you need to stay alert and healthy, in fact, it’s essential for having the energy you need to work out on a regular basis. It also helps to regulate your metabolism, boost your athletic performance, and repair your muscles, says 12 Minute Athlete. Sleep is also essential to grow muscle and repair tissue, which is key in achieving the body composition you want.

When you’re exhausted, one of the last things you want to do is head for the gym. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that healthy male adults aim to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night and if you adhere to that, you’ll find yourself a fitter, healthier, and happier person. Plus, highly fit people love the feeling of waking up and feeling energized to take on the day, whether they’re doing a morning workout or just trying to have a successful day at work.

Jillian Michaels, the tough-as-nails trainer from The Biggest Loser, seconds that notion, “Sleep is critical for a strong immune system, metabolism, anti aging  the list goes on and on,” she told Spry Living. Also, even just an extra hour of sleep can help your athletic performance, she says to the Huffington Post.

They prioritize their health and fitness

Fit people make exercise a priority. They fit exercise into their life and tend to not let work, family, social engagements, or anything else get in the way of their finding time to exercise. While this may mean having to get up 15 minutes earlier, fitting in a workout can even make your busy life much easier to handle. You may eventually find that exercise becomes so much of a habit that it will impact your mood if you don’t.

They stay active outside the gym

As we just mentioned, not only do fit people prioritize and plan exercise on a regular basis, but they don’t limit their activity to just the gym or at home. They find ways to stay active outside of their planned workouts as well, and it’s not as difficult to do as you may think. Here are some suggestions from 12 Minute Athlete to help you work exercise into your day.

  • If you work in an office building or elsewhere, take the stairs, always.
  • Whenever possible, walk instead of taking the bus or any other form of transportation.
  • Get up and move whenever you can, especially during the work week when you’re sitting all day. Sitting too long is not good for you so move as often as you can (within reason, of course).
  • Choose active vacations and pick active weekend activities, like hikes or bike rides.

They have a healthy relationship with food

The fittest people know how important it is to eat well, especially because it makes them feel better, healthier, and it better fuels their workout. While protein shakes can certainly help, they know that they have to eat real, unprocessed food, like fruits, vegetables, meats, whole grains, and healthy fats, like olive oil, nuts and avocados. When you eat food that is nutritionally dense, it’s easier to avoid empty calories and help you maintain your weight. Fit people also know that healthy eating needs a little wiggle room and when you’ve been eating well all week, it’s OK to have a cheat day  just don’t overdo it.
