Starting off the New Year on the right foot is a priority for everyone, but it’s impossible to do without a clear and focused mind. Unfortunately for most of us, January means the end of vacation and festivities and the beginning of a few long, cold months with no days off in sight (not to mention a few extra pounds from all those aforementioned parties). Needless to say cards aren’t exactly in place for a recipe for ensured success. Take matters into your own hands by taking an active approach to wellness in 2016; you’ll be surprised at the impact small rituals can have. To kick things off we’ve enlisted Emmanuel Rey and wife Suzanne Dawson, founders of YUNI, a new green beauty brand inspired by the yoga practice, to provide tips on ways to relax and find peace as we enter 2016. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Incorporate a meditative moment into your daily life

Meditation is helpful to relieve stress, worry, and to increase focus. By taking just five minutes to sit quietly and breathe consciously, one gains clarity and calm. This ritual also promotes daytime efficiency. There are many simple ways to incorporate a meditative moment into your day, both the old-fashioned way or with great apps like Headspace.

2. Schedule active “me” time every day

Everyone leads busy lives and taking time for oneself is a challenge. Scheduling personal time to exercise forces you to take a moment and hit pause. Physical activity also stimulates various brain chemicals that leave you feeling happier, healthier, and more relaxed. You can maintain that post-workout high and help your body recoup faster with the YUNI Muscle Recovery Gel. It contains anti-inflammatory arnica, cooling peppermint and rejuvenating green tea so it works fast and smells great.

3. Perform a random act of kindness

People who engage in kind acts become happier over time. When you are kind to others, you feel more optimistic, positive and self-aware. These acts also create an emotional warmth, which releases a hormone known as oxytocin (also known as the cardio protective hormone), helping protect the heart by reducing blood pressure.

4. Begin a morning self-care ritual

Practicing self-care, such as following a skincare regimen, is healthy for you. To begin, it adds routine to your daily life, creating a sense of balance, a moment you look forward to. Second, when using healthy natural products that treat and engage your senses, such as a facial moisturizer or body scrub, you begin the day more grounded and refreshed. As humans we also breathe through our skin — our largest organ, making daily exfoliation and hydration essential for optimal skin health.

5. Incorporate the power of scent into your life

Our most powerful memories begin with the nose. Olfactory responses anchor deeply in the brain, encouraging emotional response triggers. The incorporation of key essential oils like bergamot, neroli and sage instantly triggers a sense of calm. If you’re on-the- go or feeling stressed, a product like the YUNI Body Balance Aroma Concentrate yields a balancing sensation wherever you may be. The aroma is unisex and comes packaged in a handy roller-ball so it easily fits in your pocket.
