We all remember Apple’s trademark phrase, “there’s an app for that.” And quite literally, there is an app for virtually anything. While some apps may be a little less useful than others, many are designed to positively improve your happiness, health, and overall wellbeing.
There are hundreds of health and fitness apps on the market, but how do we know which are worth our money (and our precious storage space)? We’ve curated a list of the 8 best apps, in no particular order, for both iOS and Android in terms of reliability, uniqueness, and potential to improve.
1. UP by Jawbone (free)
Whether or not you have an UP by Jawbone fitness tracker, this app does some pretty neat things. The app connects with your UP fitness tracker or your phone’s built-in sensors to record a variety of activity. This app tracks your sleep, counts your steps, records calories burned, and measures activity intensity throughout the day. You also have the ability to track your food and drinks.
2. MapMyFitness (free)
This is a one-stop shop for your fitness needs. MapMyFitness allows you to choose your activity (running, walking, cycling, etc.) track your time, speed, calories burned, and pace for the duration of your workout with the help of your phone’s built-in GPS. When your workout is complete you can breakdown your pace by each mile, save your route for future use and share your accomplishments on the built-in social platform.
3. Sworkit (free)
No time? No gym? Sworkit is an app that allows you to complete high-intensity bodyweight workouts by following videos of personal trainers. You choose your workout (cardio, yoga, stretching) and create a custom workout or follow a recommended workout that ranges from 5 minutes to an hour. This app is amazing for those who constantly travel or enjoy following a trainer’s instructions. Continually switching up your workouts via this app will also keep you in tip-top shape.
4. Fitness Buddy (free)
This app could essentially replace a personal trainer. The free version of this app has over 400 workouts for any muscle you choose to work on. This app also helps to “strengthen your craft” according to its website by teaching you workouts that help accomplish various tasks in sports. For example, dumbbell sit-ups for cornering agility in soccer. Whether you’re a novice at the gym or a hardcore athlete, this app is perfect for getting in the best shape possible.
5. Sleep Cycle alarm clock ($0.99)
Sleep Cycle works as an alarm clock and a sleep monitor. The app tracks your sleep throughout the night and wakes you up during a period of light sleep around the time of your alarm so you feel naturally rested. All you do is place your phone on your bed so the app is able to track your movements. You can review your sleep each night and evaluate whether it was good or bad, and how to reach your recommended sleep hours.
6. Zombies, Run! (free)
It sounds crazy, but this app has appeared on numerous “best app” lists. After looking into it, we see why. This motivational app works by telling you something is chasing you… no, seriously. Not only does this app act as a sort of “workout game,” if you will, it also distracts you from the running. The audio adventure guides you on missions while simultaneously tracking your distance.
7. 7 Minute Workout (free)
This app provides you with numerous 7-minute cardio workouts that include 12 high intensity bodyweight exercises. Each exercise lasts 30 seconds with 10 seconds of rest between each exercise. The luxury? You can do this literally wherever you’d like. The catch? Seven minutes of exercise probably won’t create much of a difference. Repeating the cycle two or three times (if you can handle it) is more reasonable to increase overall fitness.
8. Workout Trainer (free)
This app contains thousands of workouts designed by personal trainers, including community workouts submitted by users. Workout trainer allows you to pick from thousands of classes that range from yoga and stretching, to cardio and cycling, to weightlifting and fitness tests, and many more. Workout Trainer is great for those who have no idea what they’re doing at the gym, or those that are looking to spice up their routine.
