9 Ways Sleeping Naked Improves Your Health

Sleep is amazing. If every day could be a lazy Sunday type of day, then life would maybe be just a little easier. I guess we’ll have to just keep dreaming — or start sleeping naked. The Daily Mail reports that, according to a US National Sleep Foundation study, a third of adults sleep naked. Sleeping itself has incredible benefits (of course), but I bet you didn’t know that sleeping in the nude has surprising health benefits as well.

Here are nine benefits to sleeping naked.

1. It’s easy

Life begins to feel much easier when you don’t have to worry about sleeping in clothes. You don’t have to worry about buying pajamas, and the laundry load feels a little bit lighter, which in truth can make anyone enormously happy. The one downside might be having to clean your bed sheets more often, but less or no PJ’s to wash sure as hell makes up for it. There’s also something that feels so natural and primal about sleeping in the nude. Which leads us to…

2. Feeling happy and more free

What does freedom mean to you? For some, it means not having to wear any clothing. There is nothing quite like the comfort of your bare bottom on your sheets and mattress. In this world, if there is anything that you can do, even if it makes you momentarily happy, do it. Everyone can use that good feeling now and then — you’ll only be a happier person for it.

3. It forces you to get up and move

Initially, sleeping in the nude sounds like it might have the opposite effect, especially is you feel deliciously comfortable in bed. Au contraire, because you’re used to not having or walking around in your pajamas, you’re more likely to stay in your street clothes, making it easier for you to make decisions like going out v.s. staying in. This counteracts having a sedentary lifestyle, which is attributed to health problems like weight gain. Stick that into your workout routine.

4. Skin-on-skin contact

Sleeping naked allows for a better chance for skin-on-skin contact, if you’re lucky enough to have a significant other, which in turn can lead to a more active sex life. All of this touching, cuddling, and sex releases large amounts of oxytocin, a.k.a the “love hormone,” a neurotransmitter that produces good feelings about your significant other, which in turn makes you happier.

5. You can have a better night’s sleep

Who doesn’t want a better night’s sleep that leaves you well rested? Sleeping naked leave you distraction free, so you don’t have to worry about anything, which equals a better night’s sleep. You don’t need science to tell you that better, deeper sleep leads to better health.

6. It can help your skin

Clothing restricts your skin and prevents it from breathing. Sometimes your body just needs to rest and have a breath of fresh air. Your private parts, armpits, and feet are generally restricted all day and often covered by multiple layers. Sleeping in the nude also lowers the risk of skin diseases, such as athlete’s foot, that result from wet, restricted skin.

7. It helps to regulate cortisol

Cortisol is a funny little chemical that regulates many functions in the body. When you sleep in the nude, it helps to keep your body at an optimal temperature, so that your body can create better cortisol. It’s important to note, if you’re overheated while you sleep, your cortisol levels tend to stay high, even after you wake up, which can lead to increased anxiety, cravings for junk food, and weight gain, among other things. See how important it is to sleep naked? Your body needs it to keep your body temperature down, so you can properly regulate your cortisone levels.

8. Balances your melatonin and growth hormone

Sleeping nude not only helps to regulate your cortisol levels, but keeping your sleeping environment below 70 degrees Fahrenheit every night can also help regulate your melatonin and growth hormone levels. These chemicals help prevent aging and are essential to good health. When you sleep in your PJ’s, your body heats up and prevents effective use of these hormones. Consider sleeping in the nude to be a free, anti-aging treatment.

9. It makes your reporoductive organs happier

For men, sleeping in the nude allows for cooler sleeping conditions, which helps testosterone production, by keeping your sperm healthy and your reproductive systems functioning normally. If you’re planning on having children in the near future, this can help tremendously.
