A Complete History of the Katy Perry and Taylor Swift Feud, Including the Creative Way Katy Just Apologized
The names Taylor Swift and Katy Perry put together are nearly synonymous with the term “celebrity feud.” Both songstresses have won numerous American Music Awards, but they can’t seem to win over each other.
Their rocky history gives way to a well-timed, creative gesture on Katy’s part (page 8) — but will it be enough to end the feud once and for all?
1. The two appear to be decent friends
Early on in their careers — Perry danced with candy canes and Snoop Dogg while Swift transitioned from country to pop music — the two were pictured smiling and laughing at award shows.
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” Taylor said in a 2014 Rolling Stone article. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'”

2. The backup dancer saga
“She did something so horrible,” Taylor said. “I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.”
One of the dancer’s agents refuted Taylor’s claim and said the dancers in question left Taylor based on a 30-day out opportunity in their contracts. “They just didn’t want to tour with her … there is basically no choreography or dancing in her show,” the agent said.

3. Katy tweets back
The day after Rolling Stone released Swift’s interview, Perry took to Twitter to share her views. “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…” she wrote. Fans jumped to the conclusion it was about Swift … and they were right.
“If somebody is trying to defame my character, you’re going to hear about it,” Perry told Billboard magazine when asked if the attack was aimed at Swift.

4. The ‘Bad Blood’ music video premieres
Swift rocked the internet with a star-studded music video: everyone from Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo to Girls star Lena Dunham to supermodel Cindy Crawford made a cameo. Swift called the video about “the loss of friendship,” and wanted it to show how losing girlfriends can be just as “damaging to a person as losing a romantic relationship.”
Fans and critics took these comments, along with Selena Gomez’s eerily Perry-like appearance as the villain “Arson” to mean that the song was about Perry.

5. Katy retaliates with ‘Swish Swish’
Perry’s self-dubbed “anthem against bullying” created widespread speculation that it was her “retaliation video” to “Bad Blood.” The lyrics “From a selfish or a sheep” circled back to Perry’s tweet, and fans noticed the word “swish” isn’t too far off from “Swift.”
In June 2017 Perry sang “Swish Swish” in an outdoor concert for fans and changed one important lyric. Rather than singing “Don’t you come for me,” she crooned “God bless you on your journey, oh baby girl.” Perry wished the same thing directly to Swift when she tried to make nice (page 7).

6. Katy opens up on James Corden, says Swift ‘started it’
Perry addressed the rumors head-on during a “Carpool Karaoke” segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden. “She wouldn’t speak to me. I do the right thing any time that it feels like a fumble. It was a full shut-down and then she writes a song about me and I’m like, ‘OK, cool, cool, cool. That’s how you wanna deal with it?'”

7. Katy seriously tries to make nice as Taylor makes an album
Perry again says “God bless her on her journey,” during an interview with the Today show’s Natalie Morales. “I’m ready to let it go … I forgive her, and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her,” she said.
Swift didn’t address the feud and gave few interviews as she prepared to release her reputation album. She released her shade-studded “Look What You Made Me Do” video which referenced her beef with Perry and other celebrities. In one scene she wrecks a car while sporting a Katy Perry hairstyle and a leopard-print coat that could indicate their shared love of cats.

8. Katy extends a literal olive branch
Amid videos of the start of Swift’s reputation tour, the star shared a video of a package she found in her dressing room which contained a literal olive branch. Perry sent the symbol of peace along with a note that contained the words “miscommunication” and “deeply sorry.”
Swift showed her 107 million followers the gift and claimed “This means so much to me” on camera. Looks like the two put their tour-centered feud to rest … with a tour gift.
