A Dad’s Guide to Healthy Eating for the Whole Family

As our generation continues to move away from hormone-riddled processed foods, and toward a more honest, organic approach, it often seems like we need a manual every time we go to the grocery store. Dissecting common label talk, such as “natural” versus “organic,” is a task in and of itself these days, so we set out to deliver you a list of some of our favorite products from companies who are revamping the way consumers think about their food choices — these family friendly foods are made with ingredients even your 5 year old can pronounce!

First, learn the lingo

Organic: USDA organic products have strict production and labeling requirements, and products labeled as such must meet the following requirements: produced without excluded methods (i.e. genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, or sewage sludge); produced using allowed substances; and overseen by a USDA National Organic Program-authorized certifying agent, following all USDA organic regulations.

Natural: Although the FDA has not established a formal definition for the term “natural,” they do have a longstanding policy concerning the use of “natural” in food labeling. The FDA considers the term to mean that nothing artificial or synthetic (including all color additives regardless of source) has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in the food.

Non-GMO: According to the Non-GMO Project, GMOs (genetically modified organism) are organisms that have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a lab, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
