A Gentleman’s Guide to Playing Hooky
Your days of playing hooky in school are long gone; you’re a man now and with that comes greater responsibility, typically in the form of work. Having a full-time job is exhausting and there are days when you just need a breather, a personal day, if you will. You need to play hooky — not intermediate college level hooky but pro level hooky, and it must be done with the utmost class. Although Ferris Bueller is the un-appointed hooky king, he’s also a perfect example of what not to do — he’s constantly almost getting caught. I think you can definitely do one better than him, and if you haven’t seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off then you should put it on your to-do list to watch on your hooky day.
According to a survey by the Hudson Highland Group, a staffing and recruitment company, about 30% of workers have called in sick to work when they weren’t — and these are the ones admitting to it. The survey also revealed that 41% of hooky players think their supervisor knows what they’re up to. But don’t let that fear stop you from taking some “you time.” Just remember: You need and deserve this day off.
Ready to play hooky?
As Ferris says: “The question isn’t what are we going to do. The question is what aren’t we going to do.” Hell yes, Ferris, hell yes.
Benefits of playing hooky
It’s great for your mental health. Although you already have two days off on the weekend, it’s important to occasionally take a day during the week to completely unplug from everything. You need to take care of yourself and free yourself of all obligations. You will feel like you’re in a state of bliss because you’re actively relieving yourself of stress by not thinking about responsibility or obligation. Do this for yourself; now is your time to be selfish. You will be happier, thus making everyone around you happier.
Turn your phone off, too.
Tips on how to do it
First and foremost, it must be done with class, and you must be intelligent about it and plan accordingly. There is no right or wrong way to play hooky.
1. Do it right (for you) and only for you
If you’re going to play hooky, make sure you do your research beforehand about what you want to do, and plan accordingly. Don’t play hooky at the spur of the moment, i.e. like Bueller. You’re an adult now and if you plan on taking a day off from work, you should map out your time to get the most out of it. Just remember, there are no rules. Do it like a pro and commit fully to this day off, whether it’s lounging around in bed, taking a day trip to the mountains, or doing a bunch of small things (boxing class, movies, extravagant meal, etc.). It’s your day to do whatever that hell you want. So, get on it.
2. Do not post your hooky day activities on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or any other social media outlet
Mostly because it’s careless to do so. You do not want to put it out there that you skipped a day of work to go to the beach — even if it is a gorgeous day out. Although as an employee you are entitled to a sick day or mental health/personal day, it doesn’t mean that you should broadcast it to the world — it’s unprofessional. Plus, it’s no one’s business what you’re doing on your personal time. It’s your day to yourself, remember?
3. Do not do anything work related
This is an order: Do not, I repeat, do not, do anything work related on your hooky day. This is your time to disconnect, and do specific activities that do not feel like work. Go for a margarita, get ice cream, sit at an outdoor cafe and people watch, or find an interesting activity — perhaps something that is only available on weekdays — to make it extra special.
