In the past few years, Twitter has become the place to catch controversial celebrity quotes before they get deleted. Roseanne Barr has deleted a countless number of rants — and kept many more on the internet — since ABC canceled the second season of her show’s reboot. Apparently, the whole ordeal is taking a major toll on her health.
The drama didn’t end after her show did
After her original tweet, Roseanne “apologized” and declared she was leaving Twitter. For some reason, she decided to keep tweeting anyway.
Since then, her former co-stars have shared their thoughts — and she’s tweeted plenty of her own. Each new tweet feels like another excuse. Drug manufacturers, and the rest of us, still aren’t having it.
She blamed her tweet on Ambien
In a tweet she has since deleted (but not before basically everyone took a screenshot), she claimed, “It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting-it was memorial day too-i went 2 far & do not want it defended.”
Sanofi, the manufacturer of the drug, didn’t hesitate to respond. “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects,” the account tweeted, “racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”
She said it was about ‘anti-semitism’
After facing endless backlash for her racism, Roseanne took to Twitter to explain the actual significance of her words.
Apparently, people didn’t “get” what her tweet actually meant. “Rod Serling wrote Planet of The Apes. It was about anti-semitism,” she tweeted. “That is what my tweet referred to-the anti semitism of the Iran deal.” Guess we must have missed that reference.
Her former cast members didn’t hold back
Michael Fishman played DJ in both the original series and its reboot, and felt “devastated” after Roseanne’s original tweet. He said, “Our cast, crew, writers and production staff strived for inclusiveness, with numerous storylines designed to reflect inclusiveness. The words of one person do not exemplify the thinking of all involved.”
Emma Kenney, who played Harris in the show’s reboot, had already planned on quitting the show before learning ABC had canceled it. “I feel so empowered by … anyone at ABC standing up for morals and abuse of power,” she tweeted.
The stress apparently caused paralysis and tremors
Palsy is a health condition that causes paralysis, weakness, and sometimes tremors. Roseanne said she developed it due to the stress of losing her show.
She tweeted, “I have developed a bit of palsy in my head and hands due to the stress I have lived thru.” Can this really happen?
Can stress make you paralyzed?
Stress doesn’t cause tremors or paralysis like this. It can, however, lead to risk factors that might affect the nervous system, like high blood pressure. So technically, Roseanne may not have been exaggerating her complaints.
It didn’t take long for her to start tweeting through the pain.
She assured her followers she was ‘fine’
Barr said she spent plenty of time self-reflecting after sending her racist tweet out into the world. She watched a documentary and planting trees, which gave her plenty of time to construct a tweet about how everyone “misunderstood” her.
The tweet read: “I want u all2 know I’m fine. I’ve been using this time2 reflect &2 gain insight on what I said & how it was misunderstood.. Needless2 say I’m NOT what people have accused me of!”
