After Nixing Weight Loss Supplements, This Is How Carrie Underwood Dropped 30 Pounds of Baby Weight Naturally

Carrie Underwood is our hero for many reasons. Just one of them is her push to live a healthful life. So of course we were happy to hear that after a stint of taking weight loss supplements, the American Idol alum chose to get her weight where she wanted it in a natural way — even after she had a baby! Here’s how she did it.

What supplements was she taking?

Underwood tells Redbook she took dietary supplements containing ephedra while she was on American Idol. The FDA banned supplements containing the drug back in 2004 because of its negative side effects — including cardiovascular issues and death.

Underwood has said she was at her heaviest when she was on Idol. And her choice to take supplements had a lot to do with not knowing the right things to put into her body. “I wasn’t eating enough calories, but it wasn’t because I was trying to starve myself. I just didn’t know how many calories I should be eating,” she told People in 2015.

Not only was Underwood not eating properly, but she also wasn’t getting the right amount of exercise. “I’d do 20 minutes on the elliptical and think I was doing awesome,” she told People.

When it came to losing 30 pounds after the birth of her first child, Underwood started exercising every day — even while she was pregnant — and working with a personal trainer afterward for guidance. “We do lots of lunges, squats, plyometrics, stairs, pull-ups along with weight training,” the singer’s trainer, Erin Oprea, revealed to E! News in 2015.

After kicking diet pills to the curb, Underwood went vegan — and started avoiding bread at dinner time. “I’ll have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, and I’ll make a sandwich on Ezekiel bread for lunch, but in the evening I’ll have protein and vegetables and no bread,” she told Shape Magazine. “When I wake up, my belly is flat!”

Underwood told Shape that having downtime is important, too. “I think it’s so important to sit quietly for 10 minutes everyday,” she said. “I’ve learned to give myself a break.”

Perhaps the best thing about Carrie Underwood’s diet and workout regimen is how positively she looked at her body after she had her son, Isaiah. “It’s really strange the way my body has reacted to exercise after having (Isaiah),” she admitted. “I feel like my bum’s a little nicer than it used to be.”
