All The Ways Meghan Markle’s Family Has Tried to Cash in on Her Fame

It seemed like overnight, Meghan Markle went from American TV actress to one of the most talked about people on the planet. Of course, with the growing spotlight, as came a growing number of people that wanted a piece of her fame. And unfortunately, many of those people are members of her own family.

Here’s a look at how members of Meghan Markle’s family have tried to cash in on her growing fame. (Page 6 will shock you.)

Samantha’s book

No sooner had Meghan’s relationship with Prince Harry gone public that her older step-sister, Samantha Grant, came after her. From the get-go, Grant claimed that Meghan didn’t actually love Harry and that she was just trying to climb the social ladder. One of her first threats was that she would release a tell-all book chronicling who Meghan “really is”. Said book, The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister, has yet to be published.

Grant wasn’t the only half-sibling to make a fuss. Meghan’s older half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, began publicly bashing her when he found out he wasn’t receiving an invitation to the royal wedding. (Because, you know, spewing venom is totally a good way to get someone to invite you to their wedding.) Markle wrote an open letter to Prince Harry telling him to back out of marrying Meghan, and that it would be “the biggest mistake in royal wedding history.”

Tom Sr.’s paparazzi scandal

Needless to say, the mudslinging painted the family patriarch Thomas Markle Sr in a poor light. So before planning his trip to the royal wedding, Markle was seen in photos reading up on London and getting fitted for a tuxedo. The Daily Mail then reported the photos were staged and that they had sold for an exorbitant amount of money. Grant tried to say it was her idea of her father to take the photos, although it’s unclear if that is true.

Samantha’s many Twitter rants

Claiming she was writing a tell-all book wasn’t enough for Grant. Even before learning that she for sure would not be invited to the royal wedding, she took to social media to complain that Meghan was neglecting her family by not inviting them. (Why does this family think bashing each other in the press is a good way to get invited to a wedding?) Grant, who uses the last name “Markle” on Twitter, then mysteriously changed her tune when Tom Jr’s letter to Prince Harry went public. She claimed she has ” always been vocal about the things I admire about” Meghan. Hmm …

Cory Vitiello may not be direct family, but he was dating Meghan Markle before she was with Prince Harry. There have been rumors that Meghan broke up with him over a pasta dish that he made, and that her “prima donna” behavior sealed their breakup. However, the Canadian chef is rumored to still have been dating Meghan when she met Harry! It’s still unclear which side of the story is true.

Enter former family member Trevor Engelson, aka Meghan Markle’s ex-husband. The two reportedly had a tough divorce, fueled by the difficulty of maintaining a long-distance relationship. (Engelson was in LA while Meghan was living in Toronto filming Suits.) But the TV producer still tried to cash in on her fame when he revealed he was pitching a TV show idea about a man whose wife leaves him for a British prince. (No kidding.) He axed the idea just days before the royal wedding.

Where does Doria fit into all of this?

Through all the family drama, Meghan’s mom Doria Ragland kept a low profile. She flew to London to meet the royal in-laws and be at the royal wedding, and seemingly no drama came from it. However, there were rumors following the royal wedding claiming Ragland was actually “miserable” because the royal family made her sign a non-disclosure agreement and not discuss any palace happenings with anyone. It still remains to be seen if this is fact or fiction.
