Anger and Alcohol: The Real Reason Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Split
The relationship of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie has been a hot topic from day one. After all, he was still married when they met, and since their scandalous beginnings, they’ve been one of the most talked about Hollywood couples in history. So it comes as no surprise that their divorce has also been a source of hot gossip.
There have, of course, been many rumors about the reasons behind the Brangelina breakup. And while we’re obviously not privy to their private information, from the information the couple have shared, the truth is pretty surprising.
The world was always watching
It’s never easy to be in the spotlight, but it’s especially challenging when both parties are incredibly famous. And given the scandalous nature of the couple’s beginnings (they met on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston), they were fascinating to their general population the entire time they were together. No matter how cool and collected they both appeared, that had to be stressful.
An affair to remember?
As soon as the couple announced their split, rumors began circulating that Pitt was having an affair with Marion Cotillard, his costar in Allied. However, the rumors appear to be false, and nothing has never been proven. In fact, the reason for the divorce seemed to point to a different demon.
By now, the general public is well aware of the explosive fight on a plane that allegedly ended the Brangelina marriage. Over the duration of a 12 hour flight from Nice, France, to Los Angeles on September 14, 2016, Pitt was allegedly drinking heavily and becoming more and more belligerent. Apparently Pitt got into an argument with the couple’s son, Maddox. Jolie ordered separate cars for her and the children and Pitt, and after the flight, Pitt went to an undisclosed location while Jolie and the kids went to a hotel.
Pitt breaks his silence
The rumor that the alcohol-fueled flight is what ended the couple’s marriage was all but confirmed by Pitt in an interview with GQ. He admitted that he had a problem with alcohol, announced that he’d quit both drinking and smoking pot, and said he wanted to be a more active father. It seemed that the mystery of the Brangelina divorce had been solved … until Jolie spoke up a few months later.
Had Angie already made up her mind?
While it seemed as if Pitt’s drinking and drug use were what caused the power couple to split, the explosive flight from France may simply have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. In an interview with the New York Times in September, Jolie talked about her new film, First They Killed My Father, and how it inspired her. She said that her character “had such horrors in her life but also had so much love, and that is why she’s all right today. That is something that I need to remember.”
It seems that the relationship was already strained, so perhaps Pitt’s drinking was just a reflection of his unhappiness. But it seems that Jolie already had one foot out the door when the infamous flight occurred.
Whatever the real reason for their divorce was, both Jolie and Pitt seem to be at peace now. While the separation was difficult and sad, Pitt is now sober and in therapy, and Jolie is now focusing on her children and her work. Pitt expressed his continued support of his wife in his interview with GQ, telling his interviewer “You should see Angie’s film.”
“We are a family and we will always be a family, and we will get through this time and hopefully be a stronger family for it. Many, many people find themselves in this situation. My whole, my family . . . we’ve all being through a difficult time. My focus is my children, our children . . . and my focus is finding this way through . . . I am coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer,” Jolie said a few months after the split.
Alcoholism and relationships
Whether or not Pitt’s boozing was to blame for the couple’s divorce, the fact is, people who abuse alcohol do tend to have problems with intimate relationships, and alcoholism is linked to higher divorce rates. Maybe Pitt’s drinking made him distant, which led to Jolie’s latest film inspiring her to call it quits … or perhaps the reason was something else entirely. Either way, for the children’s sake, it’s a good thing they seem to be taking care of themselves these days.
