Are Oprah’s New Frozen Pizzas Healthy?

Oprah Winfrey is a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers (she also owns stock in the company), and she has a line of specialty foods as well. The line, O, That’s Good!, features soups, sides, and most recently frozen pizzas. But how healthy are Oprah’s new personal pizzas, and does the nutritional value match the price? (Spoiler alert: These pizzas are pretty expensive.) We did a little digging to find out.

Oprah launched four new frozen pizza flavors

Oprah’s new frozen pizzas come in four flavors: Five cheese, fire roasted veggie, supreme, and uncured pepperoni. The crust is made a little differently than most pizzas; it’s one-third cauliflower. (Cauliflower pizza crust has been a hot trend recently, so it’s no surprise Oprah is hopping on the bandwagon to cut some carbs.) Each pizza is personal, but the nutrition facts of each vary significantly. We analyzed the calorie, fat, carbohydrate, and sodium content of each of Oprah’s new frozen pizzas.

The Five cheese pizza

  • Calories: 330
  • Fat: 12 grams (5 grams saturated)
  • Carbohydrates: 39 grams
  • Sodium: 620 milligrams

The fire roasted veggie pizza:

  • Calories: 280
  • Fat: 9 grams (3 grams saturated)
  • Carbohydrates: 40 grams
  • Sodium: 490 milligrams

The supreme pizza:

  • Calories: 320
  • Fat: 13 grams (4.5 grams saturated)
  • Carbohydrates: 39 grams
  • Sodium: 720 milligrams

The uncured pepperoni pizza:

  • Calories: 330
  • Fat: 13 grams (4.5 saturated)
  • Carbohydrates: 39 grams
  • Sodium: 740 milligrams

What’s the verdict?

Overall, Oprah’s four pizza options aren’t terrible. They’re low in calories and perfectly fine as far as fat goes. The only place they get a demerit is with the carbohydrates (but that is to be expected when you’re consuming a pizza) and sodium. The American Heart Association considers an ideal amount of sodium to be no more than 1,500 milligrams per day. If you’re enjoying Oprah’s fire roasted veggie pizza, you should be fine, but any of the other three options are just a little too high in sodium. Too much sodium can lead to hypertension, heart attack, or heart failure, so it’s important to keep an eye on the amount.

However, if you want to splurge without ordering a takeout pizza, Oprah’s pizzas are not a bad way to do it.

How does it compare to other personal pizzas on the market?

We decided to compare Oprah’s personal pizzas to a Celeste personal supreme pizza. The Celeste pizza contains 370 calories, 18 grams of fat (8 grams saturated), 42 grams of carbohydrates, and 800 milligrams of sodium. All of Oprah’s pizza options, including her supreme pizza, are healthier alternatives to this Celeste pizza.

But Oprah’s pizza line falls short in affordability

While the pizzas are healthier than a standard Celeste personal pizza, Oprah’s frozen pizzas are not exactly affordable. They have a suggested retail price of $6.99. For the same price, you could snag about seven Celeste frozen pizzas. It becomes a decision between buying a healthier pizza with a much heftier price tag or sticking with an unhealthy option that is much more affordable. It might depend on why you’re eating the pizzas; are you looking for a cheat meal, or do you want a few effortless, healthy alternatives to home-cooked meals? The choice is yours, but it’s certainly something to think about.
