Behind-the-Scenes Drama Reveals Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump Don’t Actually Do Much at the White House

Who needs reality television when you can follow Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump‘s White House drama? Donald Trump had high hopes for his (favorite) daughter and son-in-law. However, the couple’s roles aren’t looking so rosy.

How did the couple go from helping to “Make America Great Again” to doing close to nothing at the White House? John Kelly may hold the key.

Trump made Jared second-in-command

Early in Trump’s presidency, Jared had an insider role, spending the entire week at the White House, according to The New York Times. Jared often shielded Trump from other’s opinions on key issues.

Trump put all his Middle East eggs in one basket, tapping Jared to “fix” the region. “Jared is working very hard on peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and the last thing I would ever do is get in the way of that possibility,” Trump stated in a White House email that was shared with The New York Times. “Jared has been very effective since the earliest days of the campaign and the same is true today. He understood the movement then and has been helpful implementing the agenda the American people voted for since.”

Next: Ivanka was supposed to play a key White House role too.

Ivanka’s role was to be the champion for women and families

Ivanka started off strong, but business dealing complications and trying to sidestep some of her father’s comments may have reduced her White House role, according to Town and Country. She remained silent during many of Trump’s tweetstorms on the very issues she was supposed to represent, but eventually stuck out her neck when sitting on the sidelines was too much.

She was one of the only aids to denounce the clash in Charlottesville by tweeting, “There should be no place in society for racism, white supremacy and neo-nazis. We must all come together as Americans — and be one country UNITED. #Charlottesville.”

Next: Then the couple started tripping up.

The couple was always part of vital White House meetings and had Trump’s ear over any other adviser. Plus they weren’t subjected to the president’s usual torment and tirades, until the Russia probe became white hot.

Trump wondered if Jared leaked Donald Jr.’s exchange with the Russian attorney, Vanity Fair reports. Additionally, Jared’s foreign business ties are under scrutiny, which Trump views as a liability, according to The New York Times. Ivanka is dealing with her own conflicts as she’s been accused of using her White House status to further her business, Newsweek reports.

It’s no secret that Chief of Staff John Kelly is not a Jared and Ivanka fan. In fact, he’s wondered what the couple does all day, annoyed with their freelancing, People reports. Kelly is exasperated that the couple bends Trump’s ear, persuading him to go off script and change his mind upon their whim.

Next: Jared and Ivanka’s security clearance is diminished.

This may be the final straw

The couple’s top-secret security clearance was recently revoked, due to their many questionable entanglements. Some say stripping their clearance was Kelly’s way of signaling to Trump that, “It’s me or Jared,” according to Vanity Fair.

Without high-level security clearance, the couple is rendered to be close to worthless at the White House. Sources tell Vanity Fair both Ivanka and Jared are fighting back but overriding Kelly puts Trump in a compromising position.

Even Trump is ready for the couple to go back to New York

After months of criticism, even Trump is ready for his daughter and son-in-law to leave. “Baby, you’re getting killed, this is a bad deal,” Trump has said to Ivanka in front of staffers, Politico reports. Although Jared and Ivanka tried to play a major role, sources say they would likely be happy to return to their old life.

“If they leave they’ll be happy to go back to their old lives,” the source told People. “They love their kids so much and this is so distracting, to be a young family and have all this pressure instead of focusing on the kids. But now Jared’s name will be tarnished, which sucks for them.”

Their marriage is a business deal

Both Ivanka and Jared refer to their relationship as a business deal. It’s a punchline for the pair when they go out with the friends who introduced them. “They very innocently set us up thinking that our only interest in one another would be transactional,” Ivanka told Vogue. “Whenever we see them we’re like, ‘The best deal we ever made!’”

In an interview with Vogue, Jared discussed his home life with Ivanka. “I would say she is definitely the CEO of our household, whereas I’m more on the board of directors,” Jared said. Jared choosing to compare he and Ivanka’s roles in business terms is unusual for other married couples, but not Ivanka and Jared. As the two are workaholics, this comparison makes sense.

When asked about Jared’s role in wedding planning by Brides, here’s what Ivanka said. “He put so much time and effort into designing the most perfect ring for me! I think he is now enjoying taking a backseat as I handle the rest.” So, Jared’s role in wedding planning was, he had no role.

Allegedly, their wedding invite included a promotion

Supposedly, a Donald Trump golf course promotion went out in the mail to Ivanka and Jared’s wedding guests along with the invitation. Page Six described the invitation as having “a flier inside for Donald’s other golf properties.” “An insert offered guests a free round of golf at one of Mr. Trump’s courses,” The New York Times said. Ivanka denied the claims, saying “my wedding was a private, perfect occasion, the memories from which I will treasure for a lifetime.”

Next: Jared doesn’t like doing this with Ivanka.

Another awkward wedding-related occurrence happened during the ceremony. “During the ceremony, the bride kept trying to take the groom’s hand,” Page Six said. Imagine trying to hold your significant other’s hand — during your wedding ceremony — and they won’t take your hand. The incident would be awkward, humiliating, and cold-hearted to say the least.

Jared and Ivanka’s date nights usually involve work. “My husband’s idea of a date night somehow always involves me looking at a development site,” Ivanka told Vogue. Ivanka gives an example. “[…]I find myself standing on the roof of the Whole Foods in Gowanus in the pouring rain. At midnight. And he’s showing me this giant site he just bought. I’m like, ‘Huh. So this is why you chose that restaurant.’”

We know Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump can handle real estate and business ventures. But we did not know they’ve successfully set up seven couples. In an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, Ivanka said, “People don’t realize it’s our hidden skill … We see how our friends’ strengths, passions, and personalities align, and we love helping the people we care about find happiness.”

Bonus points for Ivanka and Jared: None of the love connections have resulted in divorce — yet.
