The Clever Way Prince William and Prince Harry Avoided Prince Charles and Camilla After Princess Diana’s Death
After Princess Diana’s tragic death, Prince William and Prince Harry were forced to come to terms with a lot of tragedy. That included their father’s ongoing affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. But the boys were not ready to get to know Camilla after their mother’s passing. They did anything they had to do to avoid Camilla and Prince Charles, including this one clever thing (check out page 5).
The boys were only teenagers when their mother died
William and Harry were only 15 and 12, respectively when their mother died. They had already been through the initial leak of Charles’ affair, plus the untimely divorce of Charles and Diana. Then, just a year later, they had to digest the news of their mother’s death all while their father’s years-long mistress was still in the picture. Needless to say, the boys did not let Camilla into their lives for a long time.

William and Harry did not take well to Camilla once they learned of the affair
When the news broke about the affair, the boys were old enough to understand what was going on. From that point, Diana reportedly referred to Camilla as “Charles’ Lady” when she mentioned Camilla to her sons. She told William that when he finds someone he loves, he must hold onto that love and look after it. William clearly never forgot Diana’s advice, considering his relationship with Kate Middleton appears to be flawless.

The boys never fully came to terms with their mother’s death
In Diana, Our Mother, Harry and William went into detail about how little they actually cried over their mother. Harry made a comment that he still felt like there was much more he had to let out about her death. Since the boys seemed to never properly mourn their mother, they may have never had that closure that would allow them to let another mother into their lives.

They saw Camilla as a reminder of their mother’s torment
According to a newly released book about Charles’ life, the boys took so long to come around with Camilla because she was a constant reminder of the painful life their mother had lived. Camilla was the cause of the marital strife between Charles and Diana, and her presence was a tragedy to them. As a result, they refused to get to know her for years.

They used the servant’s entrance to avoid a confrontation with Camilla
The boys were only teens at the time of their mother’s death, so they behaved like teens. Rather than confronting Camilla about the affair and her newly public relationship with Charles, they avoided her at all costs. Author Tom Bower reveals in his book about Charles’ life that the staff at Clarence House, Charles’ London residence, noticed that the boys would often sneak through the servant’s entrance in order to avoid running into either Charles or Camilla.

It took years for the boys to accept Camilla
The news of Charles and Camilla’s affair first broke in 1992 when tapes were released about a phone conversation they’d had. It wasn’t until 1998 that William — not Harry — finally agreed to meet up with Camilla to get to know her a bit better. A year later, William and Harry invited Camilla to attend the 50th birthday party they had planned for Charles as a gesture of open arms. It took about seven years total for the boys to come around and start seeing Camilla as a friend.

A family vacation built some connection
William, Harry, and Charles were set to fly to Greece to spend a vacation together. Charles invited Camilla to attend. She accepted the invitation and flew to Greece with the family. While it is unclear exactly what happened there, it appeared that the boys enjoyed the time spent with their father and Camilla.

But the queen was not a fan of the mistress for a long time
The queen, on the other hand, was very slow to welcome Camilla. She opted not to attend Charles’ 50th birthday party because she knew Camilla would be present. The media suspected that the queen had played a big role in William and Harry’s hesitation to accept Camilla. The queen once referred to Camilla as a “wicked woman” and had a special place for Diana in her heart. She told Charles she would not forgive him and Camilla for their adultery. But in 2005, Charles and Camilla wed with the queen’s blessing.

She asked Camilla to be her carriage companion
In 2012, the queen included Camilla in her Diamond Jubilee celebration, which came as a huge surprise to many people around the world. The queen’s husband, Prince Philip, did not attend the celebration because he was sick. Instead, the queen asked Camilla to sit beside her in the royal carriage during a procession to celebrate the queen’s 60 years in charge. Seven years after Camilla and Charles married, it seemed like the queen had once again begun to like her.

Camilla was elevated to the queen’s highest advisory body
The queen celebrated her 90th birthday in 2016. And with that birthday came a lot of decisions — the queen knew she needed to begin preparations for after she’s gone. She elevated Camilla to Privy Council, the highest advisory body. The elevation was meant to prepare the public for the next round of rulers: Prince Charles and Camilla. And it made many people question whether Camilla would be known as “Queen Camilla,” which has yet to be determined. Regardless, it appears that the queen and Camilla have patched up their royal feud.

Today, the public still won’t accept Camilla as future queen
A poll conducted by Express in 2017 found that two-thirds of the British population do not want Camilla to be queen. 19% percent also said they believed Camilla was completely unfit for the role. This poll came shortly after the 20-year anniversary coverage of Diana’s death. Compared to William and Harry, Camilla and Charles were both looked down upon by the general public. But we’re unsure if that’s enough to actually stop Camilla from being crowned queen when Queen Elizabeth finally hands over the throne.

Kate Middleton does not want Camilla to be queen
Specifically, William and Kate. Queen Elizabeth II is 91 years old, and she inevitably must start thinking about who will succeed her. While Charles is first in line, reports have claimed that Kate Middleton is urging the queen to bypass Charles and instate Prince William as the King of England, and Camilla is livid. Rumors have sparked that the two women of the royal family are feuding, perhaps because the thought of Camilla one day being queen is too much for William and Kate to bare.

More than a decade later, the relationship ‘has changed’
A source confirmed to the Daily Mail that things have not been the same between Camilla and the boys in recent years. “They are not close to Camilla anymore,” said a friend of the royal family. “The relationship has changed.” Other friends of the family have backed up those claims. One person, an old friend of Diana’s, said, “It was pretty clear they don’t have a good word for Camilla.”

The brothers were silent at Camilla’s 70th birthday celebration
The Daily Mail recently reported that at Camilla’s 70th birthday celebration, no words were said by the brothers. Most people expected the brothers to make a public statement about their stepmother, whom they had once seemed to fully patch things up with. Instead, they stayed silent, leading people to question whether things had changed between the three.

William made it clear that his children only have two grandmothers
2017 marked 20 years since the tragic death of William’s mother, Princess Diana. In Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William made it clear that Camilla was not a grandmother to his children. “… [I] just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers — there were two grandmothers — in their lives,” he said. William did not mention Camilla when speaking about the childrens’ grandmothers, even though she was their grandfather’s wife and had known them since birth, just like Kate’s mother.
