The 1 Compelling Reason Why This Celebrity Couple Swears By an Open Marriage

Polygamy, while valued in certain cultures and relationships, isn’t the norm for most couples, celebrities included. The media will promote celebrity couples who have “gotten it right,” or who you may want to “be just like.” However, they rarely cite the ones who are in an open relationship.

These celebrity couples preach a lot about trust and reliability and how they make their relationships work. While “monogam-ish,” these popular pairings teach us some interesting things about real love. One couple, in particular, swears that their marriage wouldn’t be the same without this one factor (page 6).

What we can learn from ‘monogam-ish’ celebrity couples

When we think of the walk down the aisle (or standing at the end of it) we often picture a future that centers around a union with one person, forever, until death ‘do us part.’ While for some couples that future is a reality, for plenty of people, it doesn’t work out.

The following celebrity couples have redefined what a good relationship means to them — and monogamy and fidelity aren’t the first priorities on their list. As Emma Thompson, who is currently married for the second time, said, monogamy is an “odd state,” and the “disbelief and horror” of infidelity is unrealistic.

Although they’re no longer together, Angelina Jolie swore by one rule of their marriage that the two divorcees still follow. “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship,” Jolie told Das Neue Blatt, a German magazine, “it’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterward.”

She went on to say that neither she nor Brad ever claimed that living together meant being chained together. “We make sure that we never restrict each other,” she said.

Ethan Hawke finds conventional marriage dynamics childish

Ethan and Ryan Hawke have been married nearly a decade and has never shied away from expressing his views on exclusive relationships. In an interview with Mr. Porter, he remarked, “People have such a childish view of monogamy and fidelity. ‘He cheated so he’s bad, she cheated so she’s bad,’ as opposed to a recognition that our species is not monogamous.”

He added that he believes human beings are sexual beings and that while he and his wife, Ryan, are currently married and committed, neither of them know what the future will hold. “If you really love somebody you want them to grow, but you don’t get to define how that happens,” he said.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis began a ‘No Strings Attached’ situation

The No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits stars embarked on their own movie-worthy, casual relationship and learned a lot about love and monogamy. Resisting putting monogamous pressure on the relationship worked in Kutcher and Kunis’ favor: The two are happily married with two kids.

“We started dating with the idea we’re both never going to get married,” Kunis said to Howard Stern on his show.”[Kutcher] just got out of a marriage. I got out of a long relationship. I was single and having the best time ever. I was totally dating, having a great time, and I was like, ‘I’m never getting married.’ He’s like, ‘Great, neither am I!’ And we’re like shaking hands on it and we’re like, ‘Life is great!’ A year later, we’re like, ‘Tomorrow, let’s get married.'”

Dolly and Parton and her husband, Carl Dean, have been married for 50 years. Their secret is a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy when it comes to extramarital lovers, according to PopDust.

“If we cheat we don’t know it, so if we do cheat, it’s very good for both of us. I don’t want to know it if he’s cheating on me,” she said, the site reports. “If I’m cheating on him, he wouldn’t want to know it. And if we do, if that’s what’s making it work, then that’s fine too.”

In 2013, Jada took to Facebook to address rumors that she and Will have an open marriage, insisting that they have a “grown” one. Her post read that: “Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want because we TRUST each other to do so.”

Jada stopped by Howard Stern’s show to dispell any rumors and explain her relationship with Will. “Here’s the deal, Howard, you’ve got to trust who you’re with. And at the end of the day, I’m not here to be anybody’s watcher … He’s a grown man … So, he’s got all the freedom in the world.”

Tilda Swinton and John Byrne did it for the kids

Harper’s Bazaar interviewed Swinton to discuss how “giving up monogamy can set you free.” Swinton and her now ex-husband, Byrne, had an open marriage while together. While married, the couple lived in a large Scotland home with their twins … and Swinton’s lover, Sandro Kopp, an artist 20 years her junior.
When pressed by reporters, she called her arrangement “sane,” saying, “We are all a family,” she has said. “What you must also know is that we are all very happy.” She admitted that while to others, their arrangement may seem odd, but “it is certainly the best thing for the children.”
