Liver disease affects about 7% of the U.S. population. Although that amounts to millions of people, its symptoms are not well known among adults. As a result, the disease often goes undetected for a long time, and later treatment can be difficult. Here are some of the earliest or most common signs something isn’t right with your liver, including one symptom many people often overlook on page 10.
1. You’re itchier than usual
If you feel like you’ve been scratching nonstop but can’t pinpoint a rash or any other cause, it could be a sign of liver disease. When the liver has trouble functioning, bile deposits can build up in the skin instead of being filtered out. This creates an itchy reaction on the skin. It can result in irritation, especially since it won’t stop until the liver disease is diagnosed. You may have other symptoms of liver disease before this symptom develops.
