Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Gigi Hadid’s Workout Routine, Including the Secret to Her Supermodel Abs

Gigi Hadid is a force to be reckoned with. The Victoria’s Secret Angel took the fashion world by its Fendi jacket and turned it inside out: she currently makes nearly $300,000 an Instagram post as an “influencer” on the platform.

Modeling isn’t all the glamour and glitz it’s made out to be, and it’s expected Hadid will maintain a strong, fit body. In fact, she’s revealed her struggles with being called “too heavy” or “too thin” in the past by designers. Hadid has a seriously inspirational and healthy workout routine — as well as a killer ab combo that will get you ready for summer (page 7).

1. She starts with interval training

Hadid’s trainer Rob Piela relayed how he keeps workouts fun for the model while alternating between strength and cardio exercises. The workout in question alternates between 3 minutes of intense cardio followed by 1 minute of leg-focused strength-training moves like squats (next).

“You just want to keep your heart rate up the entire time,” Piela told SELF. He relayed how crucial support is to keep a workout regimen. “We get together as often as possible, and when she’s here—we turn it up a notch … The motivation and support, no matter where she may be, is critical.”

2. We’re talking squats galore

Donkey kicks, plie squats, and banded squats, oh my. Piela detailed Hadid’s squat routine and it’s guaranteed to make your legs feel the burn.

  • Regular squats — 20 reps
  • Donkey kicks — 12 reps each side
  • Plie kicks — 12 reps each side
  • Banded squat walks — 12 reps each side

The instructions for banded squat walks are as follows: loop a mini resistance band above your knees. Start in a quarter squat position and step right so far you feel tension. Repeat to the left.

3. She leaves it all in the ring

Hadid speaks about what boxing does for both her physical and mental wellbeing. “When you’re boxing, you get so into it mentally that you kinda forget what’s going on … You always want more.”

Piela disclosed his training method for boxing, which includes four repetitions of a punch jab-cross-jab-cross sequence interspersed with left and right uppercuts. “There’s no better workout than boxing, it’s a perfect balance of cardio and resistance training,” Piela said.

4. Volleyball and horseback riding keep her toned

A little-known fact about Hadid? She once dreamed of being a volleyball player. “I decided to go to college in New York because I wanted to model. If I had decided to play volleyball, I probably would have gone to a UC in California or somewhere with a Division I volleyball team,” she told W Magazine.

Hadid plays volleyball with fellow model Lily Aldridge and rides horses with her sister Bella. “[Gigi and Bella] were raised doing lots of sports,” their mom, Yolanda Foster, said. “They were both riding horses every day … They’re girls that choose to eat healthy, that are in the gym, that are committed to do the work to stay in shape.”

5. She incorporates jump rope and ballet

Piela stressed how good jump roping is both for your stamina … and your legs. “We start with jump rope — there’s no better way to slim down legs — and we end with ballet-inspired floor exercises,” Piela said about Hadid’s routine.

Hadid’s trainer always keeps in mind his participants’ specific fitness needs. Most of Piela’s trainees benefit from bodyweight training, jump-rope cardio training, and a minute of core exercises.

6. Gigi’s killer core workout revealed

Piela recommended a structured ab work four days a week to those striving for Hadid’s core. He suggests three moves — planks, crunches, and leg raises — and calls them the key to perfect abs. “The combination of those three moves is golden.”

Hadid uses boxing for a core warm up and intersperses cardio throughout to keep her heart rate up.

7. Don’t forget the healthy diet!

Piela added that avoiding sugar is key to a strong core. Hadid, who frequents New York City, finds it a great place to stay healthy. “I have a Juice Press right around the corner and I make my own food all the time,” she told Into the Gloss.

Exercise is important, but diet is most of the battle. “I think the biggest thing I always say is eat clean and to stay fit, and then have a cheat day to stay sane.” Even models love burgers and fries!
