Dark Moments That Prove ‘Fixer Upper’s Chip and Joanna Gaines Aren’t as Happy as They Seem

Whether you’re a home improvement show fan or not, we all can’t help but love the charming homes improved by Chip and Joanna Gaines on Fixer UpperWith Chip as a contractor and Joanna as an interior decorator, they make the perfect team. And their marriage seems just as happy and wholesome, too. With their four children, beautiful farmhouse home, successful home decor line, and bakery, the Gaines family has it all.

Of course, what we see on TV is just a small portion of what really goes on in the world of the Gaineses. It’s possible that the couple may not be as happy as they appear, and here’s the evidence.

They’re ending the show — and a feud with HGTV could be why

Are their claims true? | Magnolia Market

Part of the reason the couple is quitting the show is to spend more time with their kids — or at least that’s what they’ve said in the past. There’s more to the story, though. As Vanity Fair notes, the couple wanted to feature products from their home decor line on Fixer Upper. HGTV didn’t have a partnership with them on their Magnolia label, however, so they were never allowed. And now, an industry source says the couple may be planning another show, perhaps a talk show or a one-off special, with another outlet.

So, are Chip and Joanna really seeking more time with their friends and children, or are they just leaving HGTV to further pursue business ventures? Their director of public relations for Magnolia Market says they’re leaving just to take a break, but we’re skeptical.

What does this say about their regard for neighborhood safety? | HGTV

This incident happened long before Fixer Upper, but even so — it offers us a look into the Gaines couple’s past and how much of their lives are under a microscope due to fame. As Radar Online reports, Chip and Joanna allowed their dogs to roam around their Waco neighborhood without supervision. This bothered the neighbors, however, and led to many tickets from animal control. In total, the couple owed $2,500 in tickets, which went unpaid for as long as possible.

After the birth of their first child, the couple decided to make things right with the courts and settle their debts. They were a little too late, though, as Chip was arrested for the unpaid tickets and had to be bailed out of jail by Joanna for $800.

As The Kansas City Star reports, a home rehabbed on Fixer Upper was destroyed by a drunk driver who crashed a car into the side of the house. While this seems like a freak accident, it caused a ton of problems for Chip and Joanna. The owners of the damaged home revealed they’re upset with the frequent crime in their neighborhood. And they blame the Gaines’ Magnolia Realty company for some of the issues they’re facing.

The owners of the wrecked home say they’ve dealt with crime around them since they moved in, and they feel totally deceived now that they’ve moved in. “It’s like the Wild West here. … It’s been a problem from the beginning,” homeowner Kelly Downs says.

It’s not all fun and games for the famous couple. In fact, Chip found himself in hot water when his former partners in the Magnolia Real Estate Company filed a $1 million lawsuit against him. John Lewis and Richard Clark claim Chip bought them out of the real estate company without mentioning anything about his deal with HGTV, People reports.

As John Lewis says, “Once I had sold him my interest in the company and his show began to flourish, I never heard from him again. … I discovered that he had defrauded me and Rick.” No matter the outcome, does this incidence divulge a secret greedy side to the famous couple?

The Gaines family was under fire again when fans caught wind that their church strongly opposes same-sex marriage. The Huffington Post notes they attend an evangelical church that preaches against gay couples. As for what Joanna and Chip believe, reporters have tried to ask about their stance on homosexuality in the past, but no definitive answer was given.

While HGTV has made statements before stating they don’t discriminate, the Gaines family’s unclear beliefs have made waves amongst fans. While anyone is free to interpret the Bible as they wish, it’s possible the Gaineses are not as accepting of others as many would hope.

Rumors about divorce and leaving the show may be getting the best of Joanna

As noted before, Chip and Joanna have said they’re leaving HGTV to take a step back and breathe. And it may have been the rumors surrounding the famous couple that really started to get to Joanna. While the couple seemingly laughed off the divorce rumors on Today, they still revealed they weren’t quite ready for this aspect of their fame. And this ugly side of being famous may wear on their happiness.

Chip mentions he thinks the rumors are funny, but Joanna has expressed worry about what their most faithful fans may read and believe. She’s even written a blog post regarding how fans shouldn’t accept everything they read on the internet as fact.

Following their surprise announcement about ending Fixer Upper, it was reported that the Gaineses’ exit from TV was because they are concerned for the safety of their children. A source told US Weekly that “people drive by and like to take pictures in front of their house,” which presented “a security issue.”

However, their rep responded to the report and insisted that their reasoning to leave was “not based on concerns for their family’s safety.”

There’s good news for fans: Your favorite renovated Fixer Upper home may be available to rent. Unfortunately for the Gaineses, this is exactly what they didn’t want.

The Verge reports at least six homes featured on the show are currently listed on Airbnb and VRBO. In response to this, a spokesperson for Magnolia Homes says, “We want to do remodels for clients’ homes. That’s the true intent of our show, and we want to ensure that does not get lost in this new vacation rental trend.” It seems stricter contracts may be in the works going forward, but for now, the Gaineses might just have to live with this unfortunate reality.

Chip revealed that their relationship hasn’t always been as picture-perfect as we see on TV. In his new book, Capital Gaines, as well as in their Magnolia Journal magazine, he recalls some ups and downs their relationship has survived.

One of those “downs” included Joanna threatening to leave Chip. Apparently, he was on a trip in Mexico, and Joanna gave him an ultimatum: Come home in three days, or we’re done. We’re pretty sure we know which option he chose.

If you’re not careful, problems at work can quickly turn into problems at home, especially when you work with your spouse.

The tweet that cemented their decision to leave the show arrived at 2 a.m. It said, “Hey @chippergaines it’s been 3 weeks, and I still haven’t gotten my wreath. What’s up?!” That quick reminder from a customer made Chip realize that he’d been trying to do too much for too long. He had finally reached a breaking point.

In Chip’s own words, “A simple tweet about a late order from our online store was all it took for me to realize that I needed to recalibrate,” he says. “That tweet-fueled revelation also brought me to realize that Jo and I are tired.”
