Looking to land a significant other? Well, according to a recent study, your ticket to finding a new partner is having a four-legged friend. You already know what type of dogs are the best running companions, and can help you get into shape, so if you need just one more reason why you should get a pup, here it is

According to a study from Taylor & Francis published in Anthrozoos, men who have a pet cat or dog are more attractive to women. The study, which was gathered in a collaborated effort between Match.com and PetSmart, took into consideration the opinions of around 1200 people.

To conduct the survey, the researchers used data that they collected from single pet owners who had profiles on Match.com. 60% of the participants were women and 40% were men. Of this pool of volunteers, 72% were dog owners and 42 owned a cat. Once all of this baseline information was gathered, the Match.com subscribers were asked to take a short online survey about how pets entered into their dating lives. Example questions according to the study were, if they would ever bring their pet on a first date, or if they thought a relationship could work with a “cat person?”

The survey reveals that the users were more attached to someone because they owned a pet. According to the study, 35 percent of women and 26 percent of men said they had been more attracted to someone because they owned a pet. So what’s the exact breakdown? Well if you really want to find a significant other, you should opt for a dog, not a cat. According to the study, when participants were asked what’s the sexiest pet a guy could own, dogs beat out casts 5 to 1.

In case you need more of a reason to go out and buy or adopt a new pup, according to Animal Planet, having a four-legged fury friend can help decrease blood pressure, and ease nerves.

According to the site, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention in partner with the National Institute of Health, have conducted heart-related studies on people who have pets. The findings show that pet owners exhibit decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

And for those who have already experienced a heart attack, the research also indicates that patients with a dog or cat tend to have better recovery rates. According to the research, these benefits are thought to be connected with pets’ tendency to help reduce or at least control their owners’ overall stress levels.

With all of the health benefits, there are also the benefits of a puppy acting as a great conversation starter,  and according to the RSPCA, can enhance social connectedness  not to mention a best friend.

So, as the year winds down, and if you find yourself alone under the mistletoe yet again, you may want to get a new pup or a cat  it could be your ticket to a budding new romance. Just remember, that you should really only get a puppy if you have time to take care of it!
